TOPIC: Token Racks (TD Store)

Re: Token Racks (TD Store) 18 years 2 weeks ago #25

Hey - no big deal...everyone can do what they want here...I don't think we need to get overly complex IF an agreed upon method were to happen...we are talking about a few dozen tokens that would deviate from Guide prices...but free enterprise is easy.

Smak should just franchise out and hire people to sit there and trade for him. He gives people a price list of what he's willing to pay up to and they do the work. At the end they get payment in tokens and also a cut of anything they manage to cut off the max-pay price.

Guys,
As someone who was a trader last year let me tell you some of things to be ready for:

Be ready for long periods where no one is looking to trade. Groups leave the dungeons every 12 minutes. Often these group are headed directly to their next event and do not stick around at all after they play. Other folks have no interest in token and just came to play TD.

Be ready for noobies who want to give you browns to get your reds. Be ready for some of these people (especially younger ones) to a annoyed with you when you don't give them something for basically nothing.

Be ready for people who want to sell you purple tokens for Dollars. True Dungeon does not mind but GenCon does. It is likely that if you are obvious about trading for money someone will have to take some action, so if you do it please be discreet.

Be ready for people to be annoyed when you try to make a profit on trading. Many people wanted to give me 200 GP worth of stuff I didn't need but wanted 200 GP in value in return. I don't mind buying stuff I don't need but I need to make a profit on it.

Okay, here's 2 cents from someone who is decently equipped but not a collector/trader:

Having a "guild" that presets prices is bad for True Dungeon.

Look at it from the point of a non-hardcore type: he just went through and has some tokens and wants to see what he can get for his treasure... neat things that would augment his play.

Scenario (a) "the guild" - there's a bunch of guys sitting there will a bijillion tokens, but they all set the same price, he can't do any wheeling/dealing, and will get probably get something that he's happy with, but will likely walk away feeling like a little fish in a big pond... the big guys grouped together to get what they wanted, and he couldn't do anything about it.

Scenario (b) "capitalism" - Same guy walks out, has something to trade, and can actually get bids, some people value what he has more than others, and he walks away feeling like he got the best value for his stuff, and has a positive feeling, which may encourage him to get into trading even more, and you might even have a new token addict.

The differences between these scenarios gets even more extreme if the person walks out with a purple, or a treasure/combi token that traders are highly seeking. The person may lose out on 100's or 1000's of gp worth of trade value because there's been a preset price... is that really a policy that True Dungeon wants to endorse: stick it to the new guys who don't know better, or just want cool equipment for their rare find? I can hardly see that helping grow the community...
Illustration uses 1/4" dots for 1/4" dowel rod. Spacing between dowel rod edges is 1 3/4" on the row.
Rows are staggered from edge to edge 7/8" down and 7/8" to the side.
1 3/4" and 7/8" do not include the 1/4" of the dowel rod, thus why I say edge to edge.

That really does help - thanks!

I have an old hard-sided camcorder case that's been itching for a purpose, so I plan to make two racks that will stack neatly in the case. (I figure shorter stacks can be held in place with a small rubber-band across the dowels.)

Also - I've been trying to work out a way to drill nice, perpendicular holes without having to purchase a drill press and found this: http://www.rockler.com/findit.cfm?page=2405 It's a guide for your handheld drill that gives you the same precision for about $35.

Glad that helped Nekura,

A average token height of a token lying flat is 1/8", so 1 1/4" would be the approximate height of 10 tokens stacked. I would do at least 1 3/8ths to minimize tokens being slightly bumped and the top token disjaring. So I would reccommend 1 3/8th lengths of 1/4" dowel rod + the length you want to set down in the wood. So if you are setting 1/2" the length would be 1 7/8" of 1/4" dowel rod. And of course you can always make slots hold more but increasing the length 1/8" per token desired to be held in slot. For taller lengths, make sure to sink dowels a bit deeper for more stability.

By the by, that is a very nifty little tool you found to work with your hand drill! Thanks for sharing the link.
Carpentry projects are always fun. *smiles*

Have any of you tried craft cases for your tokens?
Just took pictures will post them in a moment.
The boxes inside are the right width for tokens. And a single container could hold 306 tokens by my calculations. With the opaque/clear plastic lid you could also use a sharpie to mark what is in each box.
We've got a travel bag that holds four of these stacked.
This could make for a relatively easy sort/storage/travel system. And could probably be used as a carry on for the weary traveler who worries that their precious tokens would be crushed by the baggage handlers.

Here's my set of rules for trading in the Tavern:

1. Have Fun

and if i had to toss in a second rule, it would be:

2. Let the other guys have fun, too.

'Cuz ya know what? If people aren't having fun, they won't stick around in the tavern to trade. That goes for the small collectors as well as the big merchants. Generally, the more rules which are imposed, the less likely people will have fun. The more fun people are having, the more they'll generate a positive vibe and more people will come to trade with them. What's more, if you trade with someone who's enjoying the experience, you're gonna be more likely to feel like you got a good deal, whether you did or not.

When it comes down to it, it's not about the Tokens or the Collections or even equipping people to Play in the dungeon. It's about having fun.

If I wanted to collect stuff and not have fun in the process, I'd go play Magic. ;)

Here are the craft cases I was talking about, you can also probably find some in your fishing department. For those who are less inclined to make something these are relatively inexpensive from what I remember. We have a ton around the house for other things(as I'm sure you can tell by the picture).

Case/box, as you can see, you could write on the lid over each box what was in it if you so desired:

It has 18 individual boxes:

Each box is just the right height and width for tokens, based on dimensions you could probably fit 17 tokens in each individual box, (quit eyeing my token collection, Yes I mean YOU!):
I have one of those in my group of storage cases...I typically use it to sort tokens into - but it is now an over-flow storage box...

They work ok - but I think they are bulky compared to Poker chip cases.

I admittedly don't know what a poker chip case looks like. I just know we have a bunch of these around the house, and with the talk of token racks I thought hey, I bet a token would fit in those.
Clearly I have no need for one as my tokens sit just fine in my mug with my GenCon badges from previous years and my tavern staff buttons. Was just a thought though.
