TOPIC: Token Case - Done!

Token Case - Done! 18 years 2 weeks ago #1

I just finished building my token case and I'm really happy with how it turned out! I figure it will hold about 1,500 tokens when full and has a slot for all the 2006 tokens and some room to grow. The case holds two boards - one has all my common and rares and the other has all the rest.

I had everything around the house except the dowel rods, so the total cost for this project was $12.

I've attached a collage of pics, more can be found at my site: www.nekurasplayground.com/gallery/view_album.php?set_albumName=tokencase

Thanks to those of you who helped with dimensions and layout suggestions. The staggered approach worked really well!

Very nice indeed. People will know you mean business when you sit down in the Tavern!

Those dowel boards look like they were made for that case! Well done!

I see you use a rubber band idea...most cool for travel. Is it best to do it like you photoed or diagional?

Heh - they *were* made for that case! :)

The rubberbanding pattern came about after a little bit of experimentation. Since each storage slot shares dowels with the surrounding slots, having the rubberband attached to more than one dowel means that removing one rubberband required the removal of all the other overlapping ones.

Finally, I came up with this:

This way, the rubberband is only attached to one peg meaning you only have to remove two rubberbands to free up a single slot. (You can also lift one end of the rubberband off its peg and temporarily put it on an adjacent peg.) I was able to add and remove one or two tokens without having to remove the rubberband at all.

(Apologies for the horrible drawing - hopefully you can see what I'm talking about...)

I see it very well - well thought out...

So your plan is to keep rubber bands on while set-up?

I can see that having so many would take time to put on and take off...

I am so impressed now I am going to have to figure out how to make one of those.

I can understand wanting to keep each stack of tokens in place, especially while in a crowded plae such as the Tavern, however....
for the purpose of simply keeping tokens in place while travelling, have you thought about something like a thin sheet of plexiglass or wood that has holes cut out for each of the pegs/dowels? Hm....was just realising that won't work as well unless you use spacers beneath each stack so that each stack is of an even height. Well...good luck. ;)

Or you could only partially cut out the holes and place them on the tops of the dowels...then secure the "top" to the board with bungie cords or something...

So your plan is to keep rubber bands on while set-up? I can see that having so many would take time to put on and take off...

That is my plan - it took me about 5 - 10 minutes per board to put them all on, so I want to avoid having to do that each time I get the boards out. I looked at some other approaches (foam, springs, putting a handle on top of the case) and this still seemed to be the least obtrusive and most functional.
