TOPIC: Token Case - Done!

Re: Token Case - Done! 18 years 2 weeks ago #13

I haven't decided if my board will come with me to INDY or not...while yours is travel friendly I think mine is not. I don't have a case for it yet...and even if I did I think I would have a hard time keeping it full. I'll most likely stick to just trading REDS and Greens and the rare PURPs I have up as trades...I'll point people looking for stuff I don't have to all others...
I am so impressed now I am going to have to figure out how to make one of those.

Here's the design in a netshell:

I made a grid in pencil on the base board - the vertical lines were spaced .08" apart and the horizontal lines were 1.5" apart. I then staggered the placement of the dowels as suggested by Dirtdazzy (Thanks, BTW!): truedungeon.com/trueforum/index.php?topic=1214.msg20943#msg20943

The dowels are 3/8" in diameter. Since the interior clearance of the case was 6.5", I made the dowels 3.5" long for one rack (to hold the higher volume of commons and rares) and 3" for the other. The base is 3/8" plywood - I drilled holes all the way through to give the dowels more support and used Elmer's Carpenter's Wood Glue to make sure they stayed put.

I'm really happy with how this turned out. Of course, now I need to get more tokens to fill it up! :)

for the purpose of simply keeping tokens in place while travelling, have you thought about something like a thin sheet of plexiglass or wood that has holes cut out for each of the pegs/dowels?

I thought about using a "cover" of some sort, but couldn't figure a good way to deal with the varying stack sizes. I thought about using springs, but that would have been a *big* pain to make.

There is no clearance in the case for the boards to move once its closed, any stacks that are full are just fine. It's the partial ones that cause trouble. (I also considered putting a handle on the case to carry the boards upright, but the case is so much easier to carry like a briefcase and that would also mean I'd lose the abilty to use the case's shoulder strap rings.)
Um just a thought on the topper you mentioned.

Have you tried egg crate foam?
It would squish for full stacks and have points going down to help cushion the less full stacks.
Just a thought is all. Alrighty back to sewing for me.

p.s you're welcome. Am only here to help. :)

OK - Pops brought up the token holder...here is a pic...

The big thing for me was having the tokens in rows instead of staggered...as I like four dowels holding the tokens over only three. Plus I find it a tad easier on the eyes...but that is the beauty of these projects...everything is to taste...

I like the use of the larger dowels - nice design!

That has a very nice look. Do you have a tool to get tokens off the top of the smaller stacks?

Thanks...

I planned on using a +2 wand of grabbing...(a dowel with stic-tac on the end).

I'm pretty surprised that access to odd height stacks is pretty easy - I think this is due to the 4 dowel design and having rows instead of stagger...I dunno...

Sorry about that...I just quickly loaded stuff I had not sorted yet...I have not decided if I am trading commons...so this board may just be for storage and/or sorting.

*little laugh* No worries.
Just patterns have been very naughty lately and not making things that they are supposed to.
I am having to re-make them so that they work how they are supposed to. Do these pattern makers know nothing???
My latest project ended up with a waist that was 7" different than listed for the size. ;/
Um, silly me to expect the pattern to fit the size they said it was for.
Anyone care to join me in throwing fruit loops at the pattern maker?
I have yet to be happy with any of the patterns I have gotten from them. I try to be good and give places chances. But with two duds, one mediocre, and all over priced me thinks I won't be buying from them again. I shouldn't have to radically alter patterns to make them functional.

By the by, looks like dad did a good job on the token case! Thanks for sharing the pic. :)

design/display thought...if there is a way to tip these display boards so that someone walking up could look at them...I think that beats making people look down at a flat board...

just add a couple of pegs or a slat that can flip down. sort of like a picture frame. i'm sure it would only need to be 2-3 inches. don't forget to make sure that it will throw off the level when not in use though.
