I keep calling it the "Girdle of Giant Hill Strength". Man, those hills are strong! :)

I love that TD has it's own l33t speak now. Is it that hard to type Girdle of Hill Giant Strength? Umm..I guess it is, I just had a problem with it. Nevermind =D

There's a major difference between l337 speak and acronyms. Would you say that the military used l337 speak because it calls the North American Aerospace Defence Command NORAD?

Acronyms are a normal, everyday thing. 13375p34k 100|<5 1|k3 7|-|15!!!

I get your point, even though NORAD is a horrible example of an acronym. An acronym should be the first initial of each word. An acronym for North American Aerospace Defence Command should be NAADC. I think NORAD is more of an abbreviation, and very well could be the start of leet speaking as we know it. :lol:

The military uses a weird abbreviation system that takes the first part of each word in the phrase.

For instance, I used to work for the organization known as "Commander, Fighter Wing, United States Pacific Fleet". We called it COMFITWINGPAC.

The latter looks way cooler on your command patch. :)

And I work in Telecom where abbreviations and acronyms are the name of the game....take for example:

I need LOA with CFA for an OC12 from the IXC so that I can have the LL connected by the CLEC in the LTA.
I figure l337 is a way to seperate those who don't get the acronyms & shorthand, from those who do. NORAD is an acronym, and is spelled out for anyone who doesn't know what it is. But when you use a confusing(?) acronym like GoHGS, or say "WTS RoE - PM me", without bothering to define it, that's l337, no?

NORAD would be entirely confusing to a person who hadn't heard the term before, as would most acronyms and initialisms. Heck, I can tell people I work in the OPCEN as a TSO for the DHS-TSA, which is true, but it doesn't make any sense if they don't know what that means. That doesn't make it 1337.

1337 usually to refer to the substitution of numbers or other characters for letters, and to the intentional misspellings of words, lack of punctuation, and the use of certain expressions. Acronyms, initialisms, and (as somebody pointed out, quite fairly), those weird military shortenings that aren't quite either, don't do that.

For example, in the word 1337 itself, the number 1 is in place of L, 3 is in place of E, and 7 is in place of T. It is also a misspelling of "elite," from which the term was originally derived (it used to be called eleet, then leet, then 1337. "Proper" reference is usually now "leetspeak").

Military terms like NORAD or COMSAC, initialisms like NAACP, GOP, or USDA, or acronyms like laser, fubar, and wysiwyg don't involve symbol substitution or mispelling - just shortening.

The leetspeak alphabet is not absolute in any way, but there are a lot of accepted letter subs:
A = @ or 4
B = |3
C = (
D = |)
E = 3
F = |= or a normal F
G = 6
H = |-|
I = 1 or |
J = usually a normal J
K = |<
L = 1 or |
M = |\/|
N= |\|
O = 0
P = usually a normal P
Q = usually a normal Q, though typically it's replace with a different letter and just mispelled (quick to kwik, the like)
R = |2
S = 5 or Z
T = 7
U = |_|
V = \/
W = \/\/
X = ><
Y = usually a normal Y
Z = 2, or a normal Z

Also, in leetspeak, some words get shortened and misspelled regularly:
Please = plz
laugh = laf
the = teh
thanks = thx
Okay = k
You = u
Your and You're = ur

That's not to say there aren't true initialisms in leetspeak, it's just that they're not the same as ones used in normal speech. They tend to match things that you find on web forums, actually - LMAO, OMG, WTF, QFT, the like, though frequently without capitalization.

Finally, phrases and sentences also can be made in leetspeak, usually by simply combining accepted leetspeak expressions and not using spaces. Also, phrases and sentences tend to either have no punctuation or excessive punctuation (lots of terminal question marks or exclamation points, but rarely any sign of a period, comma, or anything more complex)

"Okay, thanks for the information" becomes kthxinfo
"Oh my god, what the ****?" becomes omgwtf????
The general idea of "Moving along" or even "Go away" frequently become the expression "drive through," usually spelled drvthru

Yes, I know most of this is just subjective opinion and it's all pretty annoying to deal with, but I spent 5 years doing customer service online in EverQuest, and had to deal with leetspeakers a lot. I almost ended up writing a term paper on it in college (my prof liked the idea), but I ended up going another route because leetspeak annoys me so much :-P

See this is why forums are fun: A thread started to initiate a trade for an Ultra rare token has become a discusion on differing evolutions of slang... acronyms, leetspeak, etc. =D

I come to expect it...that's why I start so few trade strings...

Now what would be really funny is to start an off topic thread and have it turn into a trade string!

Any discussion at all keeps bumping my post, so y'all can talk about whatever you want! :)

So, how about that local sports team. They sure got some bad calls during their last game, didn't they?

Any bites?

I'd say on the shield 200% of guide might draw one out...

As for the Mace - well 250-300...but then again I'm partial to that thing for some reason. (I wouldn't trade mine for 5 PURPS...)

Now just may not be the best time to trade for these items as the initial trades have happened and now there are very few that might be up for trade consideration.

I've had a couple of "I wish you had posted sooner!" for the shield. No offers yet for a Mace.

My stock of Very Rares is a little light to offer 300%, but I've got one more token order already in the pipeline and am planning another in a few weeks.

If you've got the Mace or Shield and you would be willing to part with it for a higher price, please feel free to PM me and we'll negotiate. If there are any VRs that you want and I don't have, I may be able to trade with a third-party to accomodate you. I do have a secret stash of one of every token (VR or less) from this year's print run, so I could dip into that for the right deal.

So I wonder if offers like yours drive the guide value for items up...

I mean if you throw out 250% and not a soul trades with you...shouldn't that mean the value of said item is at hitting that 250% mark?

It was Henwy that said it first I believe...once certain hands get on the tokens...you just aren't going to see them traded, and that in itself upps the price in my opine (hey was that 1337?) hahahaha

Just because you get one kook to pay outrageous amounts of money for a token (i.e. Me), doesn't mean that that's the new value. It just means that I was willing to make an outrageous offer to get what I wanted.

It would be like me walking up to you and offering you $100,000 if you'd give me your car right there on the spot. Does that mean your car is worth $100,000? No - it just means I *really* wanted it. :)

I've done a few other seriously lopsided trades to get tokens I wanted, but didn't post them because I was afraid of throwing the token economy out of whack. I once was accused of doing the same over at BoardGameGeek.com and didn't want a repeat of that fiasco... :)
