I play a lot of online roleplaying games, so the tokens, and the abilitys, skills, and items/etc they provide make perfect sense. I used to attend the old Milwaukee Gen Con's, but this will be my 1st Indy one, so I've not been to one since "True Dungeon" and tokens have been around.

I'm sure I'll be an avid collector (my wife my want to trade ME!) by the time the weekend's over... but where do I start? Should I wait until Gen Con, or try and order some now? I have nothing to trade but (real) money. Can that get me some decent tokens? Will people feel sorry for me and send me some? :help: (ok, can't blame me for trying!)

Any ideas?

Z

Znick,

Welcome to True Dungeon! My advice to you would probably be to wait until you get to GenCon (which is now less than 2 weeks away) and then buy to your hearts content. With trade bait in hand, you should have no problem trading for the tokens that you want inside the Tavern and there are always people willing to help out new players. You might also want to pick up a price guide to give you a general idea about the value of the tokens relative to each other.

Other than that, have fun and enjoy yourself. You are in for a treat. =)

-Douglas
Thanks for the fast reply! When you say "trade bait", in my case, it's cold hard cash?

Z

Hi ZNick,

During Gencon trading anything with cash outside the dealer hall is not something that Rennie and Co. allow. But, here, I think tradebait is just meant as other tokens. Here's my idea of good trade bait for the present set: (This is just my experience as someone who plays the game and collects tokens, but not nearly as much as people like Gary/Smak/Fast Jack/etc.)

Tier I - everyone wants them, can never have too many
elixir of life
any healing
this year, gold--but that may not necessarily be true in future years
anything purple
gauntlets of ogre power (maybe can have too many)

Tier II - good trade bait
full plate
+1 longsword
the new items that were not around from last year(like elven chain or the new rings)
bracers of defense
amulet of armor
maybe antitoxin and burning hands

As for the token price guide, I think it's very handy for getting an idea what's a fair trade. Thanks Doug for all your hard work, you have made trading so much easier!! My personal experience, though, is that it's very, very, very hard to trade anything besides stacks of reds for purples, and that some people don't really follow the guide that much.

Also, it is important to point out that not really much of anything is required to play in the dungeon and suceed, besides some simple armor and weapons. In some circumstances, can make things easier. In others, it can help you suceed even if you make mistakes.

Thanks David,

Znick, yes, "trade bait" I was refering to is tokens that you purchase. And a quick note on the Price Guide (David, you knew I would): ;) David is right that some people do not follow the guide but of course this is true of any Price Guide. Prices in the Guide reflect and average of the token values in trades. But this discrepancy is especially true among the Token Affluent, many of which read the boards here. So when trading, its important to keep in mind who you are trading with and that tokens have different values for different players. And you can leverage this fact to your advantage by getting an enormous number of commons/rares for the Very Rares that you get in your bags. For example, someone might trade you half-plate, large shield, many long swords, scrolls, and many others for say a suit of Elven Chain.

But either way, the most important thing is have fun. You don't NEED tokens to win but they do add to the game and True Dungeon is already a truly unique experience.

-Douglas

Welcome Znick,

I assume you have tickets to play. If not, you will want to get on a wait list... but to my actual point.

Go to the True Dungeon area early in the con and hang out at the Tavern. (There is a nominal cost for any day on which you don't have a ticket to run.) Hang out and talk with gamers, traders, etc to get a sense of how the tokens influence the game and what you may be interested in.

You will get one bag of tokens per ticket to play, but you won't get them until your play time. So seeing them in action around the traders area will help. Also, if you have time, go watch the True Arena events held each morning. You'll see some tokens in action.

And a couple things to remember when in the Tavern.

1: Don't anger the wenches. ;)
2: No Pixie squashing!
Repeat it with me. 'Pixies are friends, not fiend bait!'

Thank you. =D

Actually, no, I don't have tickets yet. We just made the decision to attend. :dontknow: Anyone selling tickets? I read that there's still tickets available... are there not?

I was just going to order tokens. I guess I shouldn't now.

Z

Greetings and salutations,

Z, I'm not sure if they are still doing online orders this close to the con, which is why the guys may be saying to get them at the con. You may want to try calling first:
618-549-TRUE (8783) M-F 9am-5pm

There are different token pacakge deals, in case you haven't checked out the store page, here's the link:
http://www.truedungeon.com/true/store.htm

As for tickets, in this thread,
http://truedungeon.com/trueforum/index.php?topic=1416.0
Jenn mentioned her group got too many tickets and she was looking to get face value for them, you may want to PM her.

Any questions please feel free to ask. :)

Z,

Hey just cuz some of us sleep on piles of tokens doesn't mean we should be expected to over do a trade...personally, some of us worked pretty hard for the $$$ to spend on wooden nickles.

I'm Gary by the way - maybe my reputation for token hoarding preceeds me...

Obviously I think you want to shop your trade bait around - so I suggest you walk around THE TAVERN with your tokens - see what offers you get on things...and compare.

In the off season it is great to post a string under this here Treasure Token Trading thread...you can get some very good offers I'm sure if it is something in demand like the things Apteryx pointed out.

I'm of the mindset that the guide is a good crutch to keep people from being taken advantage of...does guide match most of my personal values on things...no - nor should it, as I am partial to things a Cleric can use, and could care less what a +2 longsword is going for, that and as pointed out I have a few tokens.

So it might be some good advice to either stick to guide or ask the person you are interested in trading with what they think the value is of something...if you need a second opinion post your question on a thread - that always gets a good debate going.

Good luck and welcome!

Let's not forget - every person with a forum ID has a link under their picture or avatar - View My Tokens - this link shows you what a person has listed as their collection or is interested in trading for...there is all sorts of trading possibilities looking at things that way...

Thanks for the replys Gary... and good to meet you. (albeit you seem a bit obsessed... j/k) Actually, I've been reading here for several hours and am already feeling token withdrawals myself, knowing I have to go do a show/performance in an hour, lol.

I am a MMORPG "nut", and run an online gaming guild that's been around 6+ years. We've played in over 15 games and have had over 3000 members in that time... with around 300 "active" right now. When I started reading about TD and the whole token thing this morning I got a rush, lol. It's what I've been spending (too many) hours a day doing for 8 years... and it's "real"! (well sorta, lol!) Why couldn't I have found out about TD a few months ago!?

I'm a tad frustrated now, having learned that I may not get into TD at all, so I put my VISA away and won't be ordering any tokens unless I find a way in. (maybe that's a good thing) I can always buy some at the event itself, right... and heck, I don't need another obsession... do I?

(well, maybe I'll order a few anyway... just a "few" pouches/bags... just to see what they're like... I mean, even if I don't get in, I can still trade... there's still next year, right?... how many kits do I need to order to get 5 free?)

My wife isn't going to like this. :tongue2:

Z
