I was on a run with a new player, who told me this interesting story about a run they were on, which I think is worthwhile for vet's to read and consider:

I was talking with a new player (3rd run ever) in the training room, they were Paladin and we were strategizing on who to guard based on the party card. They then said something like:

"Yesterday I was on a run with a guy who lent me his whole Paladin build, level 5 and I got to guard 3 players. I had like 50 hitpoints and a +3 Slayer Sword.

It was pretty awesome, but on the other hand, I didn't get to build my own character.

It was like driving someone else's car.

He loaned everyone builds so we could play Hardcore, and we smashed the dungeon."


I'd say on a scale of 1-10 this player's perspective of their experience in that prior run was overall positive, like a 7.

I would also say that there are warning signs in that story about "hugging new players too hard."

Please be mindful that when you loan out an entire set of gear, the person on the receiving end is not having the same journey you got to have when you were coming up.

I also think loaning the entire party gear to play at a higher difficulty is something that is pretty concerning - given that every year we see people say stuff like: "The vets bullied us into a hard difficulty, then pushed us aside and ran the whole show, nothing we did mattered."

Anyway - food for thought.

In my newbie run I gave everyone TEs, and played Cleric so I could heal and cast Bless. It was a blast.

Agree...instead of loaning full gear, I'll generally loan Charm of Synergy and Ring of Heroism. Then let them use there token packs or whatever there collection is. I'll typically offer up a rare weapon and armor and let them keep them. Then we always make them part of the team!! This may in itself be a slippery slope even at this level....

Vets think about what you offer up.

I remember my first run and the vets offered me a few tokens to help out and I was grateful for the help. I think a little help is appreciated, but too much may or may not be.

Good points to consider, I dont know if it was because Odins was cheaper this year but it felt like I saw a lot less full new groups this year and a lot more mixed groups. The mixed groups were usually very considerate of their new players (almost stiflingly so IMO so that may be what you were talking about).

Anecdotal, but it also felt like a lot of the new players were way more focused on their gear, or or lack there of in they sense that they has picked up a starter set for class/roll X meaning they were vested in class or roll X dispite not having played before.

Honestly the more I think about it, the more I feel like maybe our default community policy should just shift to leaving the new players alone until they fund us.

This is also going to be a highly situational issue. I've been playing TD for 5 years now, but haven't been able to improve my character build (also Paladin) beyond a small handful of URs. If someone offered to let me borrow their Paladin build to play a geared out level 5 Paladin, I'd be super excited.

But that's just me. It's also a perfectly valid response to want to be able to put together your character based on what you have available.

I started playing True Dungeon completely geared with a vast collection of borrowed tokens, and since I like being OP that has been great. However one thing I discovered that I really like about the sealed runs is that I got a feel for what The Old Days must have been like. The "Oh sh*t" experience of coming out of coaching with 16 hit points and 5 AC was a novelty after so many sure thing hardcore runs. 56 hit points and 35 AC playing Nightmare is a totally different ball game even if the damage etc. scales to your stats.

I acknowledge there's a delicate balance to be met between Veterans getting to play with their new toys and Newbies getting to start at square one. Vets could definitely ask the party what experience they're looking for before lending out high-level builds.

Vets who want to play at HC or better need to set up more runs ahead of time on the forums.

“But not everyone is on the forums.” Then they need to get on the forums, or find another way. Railroading newbies is not acceptable.

It would be great if TD would sell ten-packs of tickets, for “you and up to nine friends.” Every non-Grind, non-sealed run that starts at “:0x” should be a ten-pack of tix. If they don’t sell out on day one, break them up into ten separate tickets as usual. I think that might go a long way towards fixing some of these steamrolling issues.

I agree with not really loaning builds unless they ask. I loan out Rings of Heroism so they can use the other side of the card and Charms of Awakened Synergy. I then ask them what class they want me to play of the last 3. Treasure Enhancers are always available for loan and they rarely say no.

If they did this, it would be great if, somehow, there could be a restriction on purchasing more than one of each adventure on day 1. What I envision is:

1) Every :0x adventure is a 10 pack.
2) X groups with lowest numbers in the lottery buy out ALL of the 10 packs at gen con.
3) X groups run 10 times during gen con at their preferred difficulty. Remaining groups of players still end up railroading newbs because they were unable to reserve their own slot due to lottery system.

I agree completely +1 bump I also like the idea of 10 packs of tickets

I don't see an issue with offering to loan some or all of a token build to a new player, as long as no pressure is applied. Some new players would probably love to experience what it's like to play a high powered token build. If the offer is made without any coercion, then a player can choose whether or not to accept the offer based on their personal preferences.
