Right now, TEs are pretty pricey so you need to decide if you are defining ROI as dollars and cents return on investment OR being able to acquire better gear faster.

If the answer is dollars and cents, your math is correct and playing more is to your advantage. But keep in mind, you'll be shelling out even more money for the runs and your time also has value so you should add those costs into your math as well. Also, do you enjoy running the same dungeon multiple times? (Personally, I do as I like to try different things every time.) Is it worth potentially souring a game you enjoy just to make your money back?

If the answer is better gear, there's no faster way to get there... other than spending a lot more money up-front.
