TOPIC: The Scrolls of 2023

Hey Team,

Had a few questions. As this year continues to move forward, I have been sorting all VTD loot and making my lists. I know some changes such as polymorphism are coming and the potions for these forms are no longer collected on use for Druids, but when it comes to scrolls, I have quite a few of the C /UC / R scrolls. I have zero use form then as a Paladin / Fighter. Is it worth keeping these to pass onto a Wizard ally or possibly for trade ? I know I need the trade goods, but when I read the scrolls themselves, for instance, one UC does 5 dmg to target. Is that even worth keeping or do the get power ups in the wizard / elf wizard class ?

The reason I ask is, although I know I need the AI, I also know that in many of my runs, Wizards, Elf Wizards, Bard, and Druids cast spells to help the team. I don’t want to mulch them if they have usefulness to them.

Any advice or insight is greatly appreciated.

I run a NM wizard, and I can't remember the last time I used a scroll. Well, I can, but it is very rare. There are very few tokens that boost scroll damage, so higher level wizards are better off casting 0-level spells with their damage bonuses.

That being said, I think scrolls (and wands) can be useful for lower level wizards. Plus, there are scrolls that are super useful in specific situations. Fighting a medusa? Better have a few Stone to Flesh scrolls. Barbarian being mind-controlled by a psychic enemy? How about a Scroll Mind Blank?

I'd check with your cleric/druid/bard/wizards to see if they have specific needs.

I do like situational tokens like that. I bring very few consumable tokens for our group (the token backpack is already too heavy without them) but I do always bring a few Stone to Flesh Scrolls and Potions of Death Door.

2023, I'd only consider keeping Inertia Shield and Tinkerer Shield and those are going to be pretty much only worth it to hedgehog players, where I don't know if they bother or not, so it could be that none of 2023 are worth saving.

The scrolls I like to keep are ones that do interesting things like Plane Step or fix problems like Magic Circle, but I never use any scrolls, so I've thinned my keeps quite a bit from what I used to have.

what's wrong with me swinging at the party.

As a NM Cleric I do use scrolls. My boost is only 5 or so, but they are really the only damage I can do in combat since all my stats are geared to healing.
With out a few Holy Hails or Sacred Bursts, I can do no combat damage other than my few spells (Spiritual Hammer and Searing Light).
So combat one, basically I can do Prayer, then a scroll of Bless to help out. Beyond that I kind of watch. I am a combat medic.

Does your Wizard ally have a Tome of Useful scrolls? With a free action it makes corner-case-handling UC/C scrolls (e.g., Rain Shower to outline invisibles) or protective buffs (e.g., Protect from Evil) much more useful and a lighter load to carry. Maybe your ally will want to check your collection for such and then you can mulch the rest.

Remove woe from 2022 was a great scroll because it’s useful for six different things. Was quite useful this last dungeon

I currently have no team or reg group. I had been away for 6 years near due to Life, but still keep collecting here and there until mid last year when I can’t back for Skull con. From there I have been regrowing my collection and learning new things. Getting my VTD on and having a blast! The Allies would just be those who need them and will make Goode use of them.
