Buy the ring...there's nothing like a good woman by your side

That's really perceptive that he has that figured out at age 5.

Kim

before i can buy any ring, i need to get a little more information from her. you know, like, size, cut, settings, how many carrots or peas, =D. i can't seem to bring myself to buy something so special and it not be perfect.

as for flowers, i send them to her at random throughout the year. it is my way of letting her know that i think of her often. she is precious to me. or crazy for putting up with me. =|

Get a cheap costume ring to use for the actual proposal, then take her shopping for the real thing. Or, talk to a jeweler and set up a window display asking her to marry you, then take her "window shopping".

That's a really cool idea. My husband put my engagement ring in the top of an ice cream cone at Baskin Robbins and proposed to me. I always thought that was pretty clever on his part.

Kim

Smak...This advice is coming from a PICKY woman who wants what SHE wants and not some other damned thing that someone picked out and thought I'd like......

Get her what YOU want. It will mean much more that way. I had NO clue that Jeff had shopped for a ring, bought one, etc. I was totally floored when he proposed (I thought he was dumping me!). Every day when I look at that ring, I just smile, because it was bought by HIM for ME. I didn't have any input or anything into it. It means MUCH more that way. I'm sure that no matter what you pick, she will love it. You can always add to it as the years go by (like a diamond band, ring jacket, whatever). If YOU go out and choose it for her, it will be perfect.

I really feel bad for people that go and pick one out and tell the guy to buy it. To me, he didn't really go out on his own will and get it, so it seems to me to mean less. I just like the old-fashioned idea of a guy going out, choosing one, and surprising his lady.

That's my 2 carats worth of advice.

PS...Anything .5 carats and above is a nice ring in my book. (And remember, I was once a "princess" so for ME to say that, you know it's gotta be true!)

Lori

What Lori says is true; buying it and then surprising her is ALWAYS great. However, my experience was pretty cool, too. We went to a gem sale, picked out the setting together, and added the gems (saphire, emerald and ruby) to it. He picked out the diamond for the engagement ring, etc, etc. I was floored with the price that was quoted before they made the set and told him it was too much. He said I was worth it and that was that.

Being a woman who has never been spoiled, or even been comfortable with it, it made me feel very special.

But Smak, every experience is different. Make it your own way whatever it is. She will always cherish it, always.

Diamond prices are artificially inflated. You could always buy her a couple hundred shares of Exxon stock instead. She'll have a better return on investment.

Hmmm--bought Mrs Widseth Enron--I expect the ROI will be great, so everybody go out and buy some.

Oh, yeah, rings:

One Ring to Rule Them All. One Ring to Find Them,
One Ring to Bring Them All, And in the Darkness Bind Them!

I didn't let Mrs Widseth have that one. We kind of identified more with Elrond and Vilya so she has an round star sapphire in gold.

Seriously the ring had symbolic significance above LOTR for us. Vilya was just an afterthought. The blue of the sapphire represented the sky and our dreams for beauty in our marriage. The star in the sapphire represented goals we could reach for. It is offset by three small diamonds--one for me, one for her, and one for our children--all bound together in gold representing purity and of course the eternal circle.

As others have said. Make it yours--whatever the symbols, whatever the stones because when you look at it, it will be a beautiful symbol of the love you share.

Widseth and Mrs Widseth

Or... if you wait long enough she will propose to you and get YOU a ring. That's how it worked for me and I now am the proud bearer of a men's Claddagh wedding ring. Now granted I did go and buy her an engagement ring. I'm proud to say I did pick it out myself... with her sister along to approve it. =D
