There was just too much talk at tables that there was nothing to do with gold - people had 200GP gems and too much gold and what not - and it was burning a hole in their pouches.

Man - why weren't any of those people trading with me?!?

Seriously, gold does have a function, now. With the artisan tokens and the combos, it has become desirable to collectors, and that means that people can buy things with it, because someone will always be willing to take it in exchange for something else. Previosuly, when people only wanted to trade items for items, it was practically useless.

I agree with Gary, though, that the trader/blacksmith shop of years gone by was very cool. It added serious atmosphere.
There's a problem with player shops - sometimes people were in the tavern selling and sometimes they weren't. Newbies couldn't count on a good deal... and there were newbies looking to buy common equipment but not knowing where to go for it.
An official "trading post" would provide something stable, BUT if Players run it, then what kind of quality control would TD have? How would you address an angry player who said the shop keeper ripped him off, or lied about the value of an item? Or just gave rude service? Would it need to have "set" prices? And if so, how would they be determined? Would you let just ANYone have an hour running the store? Or would you be required to have a certain size collection to ensure plenty of goods for the players? Lots of questions to be answered.

Widseth - I like your idea of Black Fire Opal! Alexandrite is cool, too, but doesn't have the same ring to the name. Unless, of course, Jeff wanted to use one of them as this year's Purp, and one for next year. Like... Mark the Black Fire Opal as 250GP, and then next year do the valuable Alexandrite at 1000GP. (I'm just tossing out values, with little idea of what they're really worth in compariason, exept that Dave says Alexandrite is more rare).

OR... maybe... instead of gems, do "Silver Brick" (600gp) or "Gold Nugget" (700gp), or "Platinum Bar" (1000gp).

Know what would be Uber Cool? to have a tiny pic of a GemStone on the Purp gems. That would make them kinda like mini-Artisan tokens! And, of course, an enterprising individual could re-issue purps of previous years with the mini image added to them. The image-less ones would then be collectors items (not like they aren't already).
Are guild memberships an idea that has come up before? Sounds kewl - I'd love to join my local wiazrds' guild. Fighters could have some type of battle academy or something. Now to think of the benefits of guild membership...

Are guild memberships an idea that has come up before? Sounds kewl - I'd love to join my local wiazrds' guild. Fighters could have some type of battle academy or something. Now to think of the benefits of guild membership...

OR... maybe... instead of gems, do "Silver Brick" (600gp) or "Gold Nugget" (700gp), or "Platinum Bar" (1000gp).

Yes, guild memberships are still on the table. My original thought, that led to the guild memberships (which we did not do in 2006) was to actually have "licenses" for the traders. Now this would not cost the traders anything, but would be a way that TD would monitor a traders activity. You could only trade "in the player training area" with a "license" and we could then revoke the "license" if there was enough negative feedback. Most of the token affluent traders (from my observation) seem very fair in their trading practices, though. The real problem would be ensuring coverage for the entire event from the volunteer group of traders, so that you could ensure all groups had a chance to trade. Believe me guys, we are not done hashing this one out behind the scenes.

I have suggested to Jeff, and like, the idea of merchants who are looking for specific items and wanting to trade them for "ingredients" for future tokens. These might be raw metals, minerals, precious metals, etc. traded for a bunch of short swards. Or a number of wooden bows/staves for the raw ingredients to make a new type of bow, etc. We will see what the printing costs of such ideas are and that will dictate what we finally do.

And yes, I will continue to push for things to do with gold. I just need to set my mind to it for a while (or get some good ideas, hint-hint).

We need something for the common players...and about the only thing I think they might want to trade gold for is other token gear...that is unless there is TD merchandise to be had...WHICH I TOTALLY DOUBT would work.

Since TD is not really benefitting from a shop - there is sort of a catch 22 - where I can see doing away with GOLD in pouches...but still having it as treasure...I mean look at it from the player perspective - you are spending GREEN GOLD to get a pouch of random gear - you don't want to get GOLD-GOLD in that pack...

I'm 50/50 - should gold totally go away from packs...or should we find a way to really make it so someone is excited to get a bag with 250Gp inside...???

Ah, yes and then there is the age old question for some of us...what do we do with 50+ daggers and 50+ quarter staves???

Boots of Escaping are a must for 2007!

Anyone got an idea of what they actually do? Apparently, that cop made his saving throw verses the Boots magic.

I'm looking in my copy of Encyclopedia Magica. I see Boots of Speed but not boots of escaping. Boots of Striding and Springing would be cool. They allow you to make forward jumps of up to 30 feet, backwards jumps of 9 feet and vertical springs of 15 feet. I agree that I would like to see a helm in the 2007 set as well. A few come to mind: Helmet of Brilliance, Helmet of Darkness, Helmet of Light Seeing and Helmet of Valor. As far as tokens to eliminate the first one that comes to mind is Keen Edge.

Kim
It is the players that set the real value on all items afterall. (Along with TD assigned Rarity that does have a factor in the equation...I'm sure)

Right, players set the value of tokens but that value is based on function in the Dungeon and Tavern. If gold has no (or limited) function in the dungeon and tavern, then it will have no value to players.
Some very interesting ideas in the works for 2007 tokens, so keep the ideas coming and staty tuned.

I have sent a preliminary discussion list to Jeff (with my ideas) which we will pick up and talk about soon.

Here are some thoughts and ideas for additional discussion:

If you removed three of each rarity (common, rare, and VR) what would they be?

First off, I do think that Gold is fun and that TD should keep the concept. (I admit that on my first adventure, Gold didn't seem all that useful and I recall throwing a 10 gold piece in the demon's cup. But pretty quickly after that, I've come to appreciate the value of gold. It's a much more convenient medium of exchange then carrying loads of weapons/armor/etc.).

But in regards to dropping tokens, here are my thoughts:

#1. Common: Shocking Grasp Scroll. Besides its use as an ingredient, the scroll is easily eclipsed by both Magic Missile and Burning Hands, neither of which requires a successful attack roll.

#2. Common: Hand Axe

#3. Common: Tough call but maybe Hammer and Spike Gear?

#4. Rare: Owl's Wisdom Potion. Weak.

#5. Rare: Identify Scroll. Pretty much no use for this.

#6. Rare: Read Magic Scroll. Unimpressive.

#7. Very Rare: Keen Edge Scroll. Such a waste!

#8. Very Rare: Bracers of Archery. I have never seen anyone bother to use these. Problem with going the archery route is you give up Bracers of Armor and also a Shield. Just not worth it with the current rules on ranged weapons.

#9. Very Rare: Major Rumor. I liked the concept of rumors, but I think they'd be better off as Common and Rare. I would hate to receive this as my one red.
