So, the PURPs this year are going to be about 5 times as common as last year

Well, it depends on the ratio of packs that were purchased inside the $250 package vs. those that weren't and we won't know that until we see sales of packs at the Con. I'm guessing more like 2-3 times as common.

Great point, Douglas, the packs that are part of the ticket price impact that also. And even if the number is only 2-3 times as common - that is still a LOT more PURPs out there, and probably a higher ratio of the top PURPs because that is what most people would choose. It would be interesting to see a list after 21 April (the deadline for the pick your PURP deal) of how many of each of the 20 PURPs were picked.

I noticed there is a new priceguide up. Thank you.

Few questions though...

1) What happened to the Hand of Glory? I didn't see it listed. I'm also curious to know what years it was published. It was findable in bought token packs, right?

2) How could the new +2 Flaming Shortbow be so much lower in value than the new +2 Holy Great Sword? Yes, the HGS has an extra plus for a paladin against evil, but they both require two hands, while the shortbow can probably (haven't verified this) be used by all the same classes, if not more, that can use the HGS, and the bow will always deal 5, 7, or 10 HP of damage. Just curious to the thoughts on the value.

Thank you much,

JKW

Ah, wasn't aware that it was published.

I've decided (for now) to track only the new Chip Token Prices. The price guide was getting unweildy and after speaking with a couple of people (including Jeff) it seemed like the right way to go. I am going to try to collect all the trades since the last update and publish a "final" price guide for the woodies.

First, as for all the prices, this was a joint effort and I had 7 other people contribute what they thought the prices should be given the lack of trade data.

Having said that, with regards to the Flaming Shortbow vs. the Greatsword. Ah, the biggest difference (and this is big) is the lack of a strength bonus both on To-Hit and Damage. Gauntlets, Girdle, Potion of Bull Strength, and the Natural Bonus from strength are all applied to the Sword and not the Bow. Further, the +3 vs. Evil I think is going to be huge as most creatures are evil in the dungeon. And it does the most damage of any weapon. Because of the strength bonuses alone, Ranged weapons historically have not been very popular. The Flaming Short Bow is the only one to have a chance I think.

And finally, if you think about the alternatives for the people that can use the bow, the Ranger can dual slide potentially for much more, the Bard will likely be singing, the Rogue will be backstabbing (which is hard with a Bow) and the Fighter/Barb/Paladin probably shouldn't be in ranged combat. They are the tanks after all. :)

Anyway, that was some of the thinking that went into the prices. But please, set your own prices, trade away, and send me the results. ;)

Thank you for the information, Douglas. It is appreciated. Thank you to those who contributed to the guide(s).

Personally, I can do without the Bard's singing. I find it less useful than having another hitter or doer.

It still amazes me that so many people are hung up on the "must have the biggest to-hit, to-dam, armored" character. What's next? 25 STR and 25 DEX with 25 CON for good measure? I would think we'd be more interested in the fun than in the stat stacking. Well, maybe stat stacking is the most fun for some people...

Each to his own,

JKW

John,

The Bard singing is a pretty tight strategy...however, if the party is down a few players...then I can see the Bard taking a swing at things.

As for tanking up - well yeah, that's fun!

G

My personal take from what I saw of bards in the three runs I did, was that their singing didn't provide any real advantage. People aren't good enough sliders and don't have enough good luck.

I was wishing the bard would use some of the scrolls I had - at least the monster would have taken some damage. In at least two of my runs, the wizard always hit and dealt damage each round while other characters hit infrequently. Perhaps the bard's singing makes more of a difference when you have good sliders, but without that, you'd be better off (IMHO) having a bard tossing out magic missles or something. At least they will automatically hit and do some damage.

Douglas, I'm having trouble finding the new price guide. Can you tell me where it is linked? The links I see are both to old (different) versions.

[Edit] Never mind, the link is showing up now on the Treasure Token page. Interesting stuff, thanks Douglas!

Thanks!
Mike
