TOPIC: Tokens in the recent newsletter

Re: Tokens in the recent newsletter 17 years 1 week ago #25

I'd be in favor of option 3 as well, the 1 UR exchange per person limit.

While I could burn 5 trades in a row on UR's, as could quite a few others around here, that would seem to kind of diminish their significance.

I'm not a tokenaholic and therefore I may get stoned for saying this out loud.

But personally I say drop being able to convert for Ultra Rares. I mean no offense but with more and more ways of being able to acquire them are starting to lose some of their specialness.
People OOh at them because they are powerful and they want them. But they are no where near as rare as they once where. In 04', I was lucky if I saw 1 red when working tavern and having stuff for trade.
Currently you already have 3 avenues for acquiring Ultra Rare tokens. Do people really need a 4th avenue?

Say go option number 1 that Douglas proposed. Don't cheapen the purps any more. But thats just my thought. And I admittedly know nothing.

I'll second this. Even limiting it to 1 UR trade per person isn't going to solve things but people are going to just find proxies to do additional trades. Get a friend/SO/random stranger to stand in line and do a second/third/fourth trade on your behalf. It would be really hard to verify whether a given person is doing the trade for someone else's benefit. Etc.

I disagree with the argument that you should stop doing a good thing just because people can figure out a way to take advantage of it. Think of Reagan's welfare mom as a reason to get rid of welfare!
And look how much good welfare reform did in the end despite all the doom and gloom arguments. I say we cut it.

I was thinking the same thing. I appreciate the pre-order specials this year, but ... I have more trippled my UR inventory with the pre-orders this year. Almost feels like cheating. I do like my URs though. I won't be trading the ones I bought. Might trade off ones if I get them in the random lot, but not the ones I specifically chose.

If people are concerned about the scarcity of the URs, some possible options are:

1) Only allow conversion to Uncommon and Rare (not URs) -or-
2) Change the ratios to decrease the incentive to trade in tokens (1:30, 1:15, 1:30)
3) Limit to 1 UR per person
4) Increase the number of URs to like 20 (one of each).

I could see:

• Option 1 working though I would be disappointed
 •
• Option 2 only working if the number of Rares required to trade was on the order of 200 to 1 (assuming a pool of only 12 URs). I did some napkin math on this here: http://truedungeon.com/trueforum/index.php?topic=2334.msg38704#msg38704
 •
• Option 3 only working if also coupled with a random system to pick the people who could trade. At 25 to 1 there will be way more then 12 people going after the URs, I would expect at least 30 people.
 •
• If the pool on option 4 was on the order of 100 tokens (see above napkin math) then I think people could freely trade, the URs would run out (likely first day) but everyone would have gotten a chance at them. I doubt upping a 12 token pool to a 20 will have that much impact unless coupled with something else (Like a drawing for the right to do a UR trade)

The scarcity of TD rarest prizes is always going to cause debate (People who earned them "The Hard Way" (By that I really mean the people who earned them first) are generally going to argue for more scarcity, people who haven't gotten them will be arguing they shouldn't be as scarce).

I would like to see scarcity held below the level at which theft start becoming attractive to people. If we see third-party dealers (I'm not aware of any yet) buying individual tokens for $50 or above at the Con then I think we may start seeing some token theft. Given we just saw an ebay auction getting up to $200 for a single UR (I admit, I'm part of the problem) I think URs may be getting rare enough to cause a problem.

Gee wiz.

It seems like weeks since Jeff's 5/2 post that he'd think about it some and get back with us.

I'm surprised that these two days seem like weeks. Just eager to hear more I guess. I understand it probably takes a lot more than 2 days to find time outside other obligations and family to give this more thought. No pressure. Was just surprised it has only been two days. Could have sworn it had been more.

Token Crazy,

John
Considering increasing debt level versus expenditures on tokens, I'm Nuts.

YOU on the other hand.... can't even go there! ;)

We have three major projects going on that must be finished ASAP.

They are:
V6.0 of the token guide
Volunteer Schedule
Final draft of the module to send to WoTC for their blessing.

Not listed in any particular preference or order.

Once those things are out of the way, this weekend hopefully. I am sure Jeff will concentrate on other decisions. A gentle reminder next week would be appropriate.
