Re: Healing Tokens 16 years 11 months ago #13

yeah, well, I was thinking of past things I've read and experienced.

For instance, the mummy-looking thing in the Resurrection room in 2006.
The skeleton warrior in a coffin in 2004 (I read some interesting things such as, he was just there doing nothing and we attacked him! to "we didn't attack him and found the key")

In other words, if it ain't moving, you might not want to try to kick the crap out of it. That might seem smart (to get the initiative) but might be a bad move in the long run. You never know! If would have been interesting to put a Net on the mummy (turned out to be a gargoyle as I recall) in 2006 BEFORE tuching anything else. Perhaps even stake down the net. THAT would have been smarter than what we did...

it's not a bad idea to have at least 1 member of the group keep a very close eye on and be prepared to attack whatever sleeping/non-threatning/unobtrusive monster. 6 people should be able to work the room over.

As I recall, it was a ghoul and it was easy xp all things considered.

What you really have to remember is that if you're going to engage in combat, do it early. Poking weird crap that might come alive and bite you is not something you want to do when the gong rings. Do questionable crap early so you have time to fix it.

Eh, that depended on the situation. On one of my earlier runs (with token-poor newbies), once the Ghoul came alive, everyone was rooted in place. So only one or two players could fight with melee weapons and everyone else could only attack with ranged (most didn't have any). So that was a scenario where the ghoul could (and turned out) to be quite deadly.

Most of us just pulled out range whozits and pummeled it to death. I guess it might have been different if the wizard was the only one in melee range or something but I think we had a tank up there. It didn't really matter at that point how long the combat took since tankasaurus could take the damage.

And wasn't it possible the Cleric might have been able to turn for damage - or even touch the attacked char for healing points...

Hm. Might have been handled differently by different DMs at different times as knowledge was learned and passed around.

What I remember is:
All party members were rooted in place.
We were told the ghoul had latched on (like wrapped its legs around) a single party member.
For the most part, we were told that only the ghoul and that party member could engage in melee and everyone else had to stand aside and watch.
We were told missle weapons were unusable as it would be impossible to accurately pick out the ghoul from the party member (in other words, shots fired had a 50/50 chance of hitting the party member).
No one thought to have the cleric turn or heal. OR the cleric was dead from the previous rooms.
Every now and again, if players were standing close to the person grappling with the ghoul, those standing close were allowed to make melee attacks.

In any case, we're a little off subject here.

Odd - we were told specifically that range weapons were the only thing we could use. I assumed the entire room was designed to encourage the use of ranged weapons.

DITTO what Mike said...

I specifically recall tossing and hitting the ghoul with a T-stone - the only quality ranged weapon for a Cleric!

I DMed that room for one shift. If I recall correctly, the party was frozen in place, and the ghoul would engage in melee with the closest chracter (closest to the head), but other characters were free to use ranged weapons, non-touching spells, etc. I don't think anyone tried to turn undead.

Brian
If my memory serves, I did the TURN then the T-Stone...I think I got 12 points or so on that darn Ghoul and it did not claim one victim that day...

My memory is not the best.

It could also be the parties I remember simply did not use their ranged weapons. Then again, some DMs were new at it too...
