TOPIC: Healing Tokens

Re: Healing Tokens 16 years 11 months ago #25

It probably is a classic example of why we are trying to achieve a better training level with all DMs and having more consistent ways of treating each room.

Hopefully in the future there will not be many cases of parties getting a completely different treatment to a room, unless I go back to DM'ing that is.... ;)

Hey - I thought Mike Wice (sp) did a great job on the Blink Dog room in the past...

I thought for sure the way to beat the dog was to use the seldom used Command spell the Cleric has at his disposal. So when I popped that spell off and told Mike I was commanding the dog to SLEEP, I expected to hear that we had solved the problem and could walk out of the room...

When Mike gave me a look like - "You want to do what??" I figured ooops, ok this is not a scripted or known response for the room. However, I thought it was a viable one - even if I could not speak Blink Dog. Isn't it assumed that a simple command word is most likely understood by low inteligence animals..

Anyways Mike called the situation in, I'm assuming to you Dave...and we were give one round of free action as the Blink Dog napped...

A good solution for an unexpected situation - sorry if that was kinda off topic - just wanted to share a possible process for the unexpected junk that does still come up from time to time in this game.

G

Yep, that is why we have the radios. And yes, Mike does a great job.

I am pretty sure we are letting the DMs see the rooms early to try and "break" them with unique solutions. You guys always seem to come up with a few head scratchers, though. Truthfully, it is part of the fun of being a DM, seeing how various groups try and work through puzzles and adversity.

Dave

All training issues asside, I think the DMs did a good job last year. Cheers to all the volunteers putting in the effort.

... grr, grumble grumble.
;)

Actually, I think the DMing has improved drastically over the years. I still miss being able to take one DM all the way through the dungeon (because it builds up such a cool rapport) but when you're dealing with players "in bulk" the way TD is now, one DM per room is the only way to give any consistancy. And yeah, TD has a lot of really good and dedicated volunteers. Including Dave.

A blink dog is actually an intelligent creature but has no knowledge of common tongue. It speaks only its own language of yelps and barks.

Classic D&D rules say the command must be spoken in a language the target understands...so I guess since TD characters do not have a list of languages as part of their stats - we were given the benefit of the doubt and the command spell worked on the Blink Dog...

Maybe one COOL geek thing to add to the CHAR descriptions are languages each CHAR knows...

That at least keeps the Command spell honest and true to what I think should be in-game rules.

Also - would the Cleric have 2 command spells and only one silence spell? I dunno....

One year it MIGHT be cool for players to be able to pick from a list of spells, and load up their X number of slots from a list...maybe not pick every spell, but fill a few empty slots - just an option to make players more in control of their CHAR (or make them feel they had a hand in it anyway).

Or maybe - if that's too difficult to do - have 2-3 different character sheets with different spells they can pick from. Maybe one set is more offensive based, one more defensive based, and one balanced.

More expensive that route Bro...especially if things change year to year...

Just making one new card with empty lines gives you options every year - like even new spells that creep into the game...

However space on the cards might be a problem - then we have issues of handwriting and rub-off...etc.

With the cost and effort to create the physical number of copies of character sheets that need to be produced just to cover all the groups in two dungeons, 10 on deck tables, and used sets in transit, the likelihood of multiple versions is low.

(just speaking as the lamination mule, that is)

And don't forget your DM's instead trying to learn/memorizing 10 different sets of character stats. You'd up that to 30 sets. Um yeah, for that reason alone I'd say No. DM's have enough to try and learn.
Not that anything I say yes or no to has any effect inside the event. That was just my train of thought.
