TOPIC: Special Tokens for 2007

Re: Special Tokens for 2007 16 years 11 months ago #13

I realized missle weapons would have no bonus, but just wondered if the power of the throw would come into play at all--same with the spear, but KISS is by far the best guide.

Thanks.

Widseth

throw = missile...there is no difference between a bow-shot projectile or an arm thrown projectile in D&D.

The big assumption is that guantlets and girdle allow you to put more arm/body into a melee attack, and this is not used on a thrown projectile attack...

And the CLASSIC rules also said - that Gauntlets gave help to bend bars...and the Girdle helped with the lift gates task...I think they raised your base strength to a higher nubmer which raised the % chance you could BB or LG...been far too long since I played some good ole D&D!

I agree, that a certain amount of additional force could add to affect, e.g. the harder you throw an axe the better (deeper) it sticks. So it would seem logical that more force could equate to more damage for weapons that are not launched (bow), but yes, to avoid too much complication it seems better to have melee weapons have the strength bonuses and leave ranged weapons be dex enhancing finesse.

Even though thrown weapons seem counter to the arguement, I know people who throw knives and axes for demonstration at frontier shows that swear that strength has little to do with it if you care about accuracy.

I've done alot of archery, and strength matters only in terms of being able to draw a bow with greater resistance, and that only affects how far you can shoot - it does not affect accuracy. Then again, if I draw a 50 lb bow and a 20 lb bow at a target at close range and hit it, the arrow from the 50 lb bow will go in alot deeper!
I thought someplace that D&D rules tried to catch that and they actually made different bows for different strength types...

Haven't played D&D in a LOOOONNNGGG time. I only remember they had long and short bows, with different to hit modifiers at different ranges, with the short bow unable to reach the same distances as the long bow.
I remember Composite bows...and then I remember some sort of strength tuned bows...honestly it could very well be some Thief Guide or some such thing I was reading...we Clerics don't tend to use a bow unless we need one on a bandage...

In DnD 3.5, longbows and shortbows don't care about your strength, they do a set die roll for damage. The composite longbow can be set to allow up to your strength bonus to be added to damage. You just have to pay a little more for the heavier draw strings, etc. For thrown weapons (daggers, hand axes), you add your strength bonus to damage.

In all cases, they are all ranged attacks, so only your dex score figures in to the "to hit" roll. i.e. strength has no effect on accuracy.

Sounds like 3.5 has it about right...

Just an addition to the composite bow rules:

The bow must be configured for a certain strength. Those with less strength will take a penalty using it and those with higher strength than the bow is made for will not get an increased damage bonus (just the bonus from the strength that it was made for).

Yep - that's what I recall...I have the 3.5 books and thought that was a pretty fair addition!

I also read the part about daggers and thrown stuff getting the STR bonus...but I dunno about that call.
