Trading Valuation 16 years 10 months ago #1

Last year was my first year doing True Dungeon, and my first Gen Con. Had a blast, going back, and have secured tickets for True Dungeon yet again. Now, we have a new token system.

What value are traders placing on the platinum coins?

I ask b/c I have seven of them, and I'm not interested in collecting them all, just getting what I need to be the best bard I can, but don't want to get ripped off either.

Any help is appreciated.

Aaron

Aaron,

So far the value of the plats is between 1x (or just above) and 2x of the gold counterparts. My guess is that for consumables and for commmons/uncommons, you aren't going to get too much above the Gold versions unless you find someone who happens to be missing the token you have. But even then, there are probably more Platinum Commons of each token than there people putting together Platinum sets. For Rares though, you could probably find someone who would pay 1.5x to 2x to upgrade.

Hope this helps,
Douglas
Ok, so my platinums aren't considered rares themselves, and there are rare platinums/common platinums as well? I'm not looking to demand tons of loot or anything for these, but only one comes per 10 so collectors are going to want them I guess. I need to check the rarity I guess.

If you list them, you can see what kind of offers you get. I'm sure many traders could help you be the best Bard you can be. Do you have Masterwork Bard Instrument?
The "rarity" of tokens has been renamed.

There are Brown, Green, Red, and Purple, in that order of rarity with Purple being the rarest. (at least let's hope I have the brown and green correct, I am colorblind afterall)
The wording has changed this year to align with D&D conventions: Common, Uncommon, and Rare. Ultra Rare is the Purple and does not align with a D&D convention, but seemed right for True Dungeon.

One out of every 1,000 tokens is an Ultra Rare (Purple).
One out of every 10 tokens is a Rare (Red).
Two out of every 10 tokens is an Uncommon (Green).
Seven out of every 10 tokens is a Common (Brown).

One out of every ten tokens is platinum.
The platinums were evenly distributed through ten stacks of ten.
This means that, out of every 100 tokens, One Red will be Platinum, Two Uncommons will be Platinum, and Seven Commons will be Platinum.
As you can see, a Platinum Red/Rare token is rare indeed.
To my knowledge, there are no Platinum Ultra Rares.

I was missing about 40 or so Platinums. I figured most full-time traders would give about x1.25 to x1.5 the GP value in the Token Price Guide for Platinums they were acquiring. As such, I decided to offer x2 the GP value.

Some of the full-time traders really seem to trade by rarity first and GP value second.
Some want Plats for Plats and won't accept Gold tokens in return.
Some value the wooden tokens more as they are OOP.

It all depends upon what you are offered or what you can drive up and still agree upon.

John
JKW

My platinums are as followed, I'd appreciate any insight into their relative value:

Leather Armor
Sling
Hand Axe
15 gold pieces
50-ft. rope
Grappling Hook
Antitoxin

I have a feeling these are all considered to be common platinums. =(
Do you have Masterwork Bard Instrument?

Ironically, I pulled two of these. So, I guess I have a back up, just in case. I wish there was a magically enhanced bard instrument I could shoot for. Maybe next year's new batch will contain one.

I pulled something called an amulet of thorns, which is really awesome, can't wait to wear that. Also got a cloak of resistance +1.

None of these are platinums though. Are the platinums the only collectible ones that people are going for?

Also, is it assumed that people out here are ONLY trading the new tokens, or should I be explicitly clear with potential traders that I'm only looking for the new tokens?

You'd want to specify if you're looking for the chip version or the older wooden token style.
Also if you are looking for a wooden token, if you are looking for a specific year/run you'd want to mention that.

Such as spider back (06)
Wind(05A)
Dragon(05b)
Pentagram(04)
Blank(03)
There are also some .com UR's.

Did I get those right bro?
I pulled something called an amulet of thorns, which is really awesome, can't wait to wear that. Also got a cloak of resistance +1.
None of these are platinums though. Are the platinums the only collectible ones that people are going for?

Be clear. It'll save you headaches.
If talking about 2007 tokens, specify GOLD or PLAT. Since this is the first year for the Chips, specifying GOLD or PLAT at this time also indicates 2007.
If you want a Wooden token (fronm 2003-2006), specify that. If you are a collector, for instance, you might want to specify you want a 2006/Spider Gauntlets of Ogre Power instead of the new Chip tokens. Just an example.
If talking about prior years, you'll want to specify which year, or what logo is on the back. Of course, there are also some Misprints out there...prints from one print run that have the back-side logo from an earlier print run. So, sometimes, you'll need to rely on other factors besides the logo on the back in order to determine which year a token is from.

People will collect anything; you just have to find the right collector.
Some collectors collect Full sets of GOLD or PLAT. Others may set their sights a little lower and go for a full set of Common GOLD. There are all types of collectors.

Then, there are people with One Ten Pack, Five Ten Packs, and 10 Ten Packs.
Those people are probably going to want to trade their duplicate tokens for gear that they think will help them survive the dungeon. You may find some of the best trades here.
If you are looking for Older, Out of Print items, however, those individuals with hoards of tokens may be your best bet.

Good luck!

Oh, and yeah, those items you listed are fairly common items.

John
JKW
I wish there was a magically enhanced bard instrument I could shoot for. Maybe next year's new batch will contain one.

That would be sweet. Let's keep our fingers crossed!

I pulled something called an amulet of thorns, which is really awesome, can't wait to wear that. Also got a cloak of resistance +1.

Both of those are nice pulls, especially the amulet!

None of these are platinums though. Are the platinums the only collectible ones that people are going for?

No, platinums aren't the only collectibles. There are certain people who are trying to get full platinum sets, so to them the plats are very collectible. Most people trade based on rarity - The Rare tokens (ones with the name of the item in Red) will be more likely to fetch trades (depending on which tokens they are), and a few people are looking for certain Uncommon (green text) tokens. Very few people are looking for the Commons (brown or black text). Although, if you are looking to round out your adventuring gear with some common items, a lot of people would be willing to help you get set up.

Hope that helps.

Feel free to PM if you have any questions!

Way to go Sis! Spot on...and this without your handy dandy set of 1GP coins to reference...but they will be there soon! hehehehe...

Thanks guys. So it's really all about rarity of the specific coin, and the platinum status will only matter to a specific core of traders. That's perfect.

I'll go through my gold tokens and try to determine what I'm looking for, and what I might have for trade.
