TOPIC: Reserve Tokens

Reserve Tokens 16 years 11 months ago #1

I wanted to conduct a few polls to gage interest and get some opinions and suggestions of things that we might consider for the future. I can not make any promises for the potential of any of these ideas to see the light, but the more information I collect the more ideas we can draw on in the future.

The first of these polls (this one) explores the idea of “debulking” stockpiles of tokens.

Many people have expressed concern that with the new heavier tokens, traveling (by plane) or for that matter anywhere with newer tokens is a “weighty” proposition. ;)

Some people have been discussing larger denominations of “currency” and the idea of a “TD Bank” or at least a “Templar” like checking account. The thinking is that it might be easier to travel and conduct trades with “GP vouchers” or at the very least higher denomination tokens.

This got me thinking of “Reserve Notes’ or possibly “Reserve Tokens”

• These tokens could be issued in denominations of 100, 500 and 1000 GP.
 •
• They could be tokens, but not a part of any year issue (i.e. not a true yearly collectable).
 •
• They would be intended to be recycled and serve as markers for larger amounts of GP.
 •
• They could only be available through mail transactions (and possibly at the con) with the True Adventures office or a proxy (me).
 •
• They would be accepted by TD as part of combos or auction sales.
 •
• They would be issued in the form of gold and platinum Bouillon tokens.
 •
• While they might be able to be “broken” (e.g. 5-100GP tokens for a 500GP token), TD would not be able to “cash out” these tokens easily and give you back hundreds of GP tokens.
 •
• They would be accepted for both new and old tokens.
 •

So to start this poll, I would like to know if there is interest in such an idea and if the collectors and traders would be willing to use these tokens as a replacement for large numbers of 1GP tokens?

Your comments are welcome…

Dave
At the CON availability would be nice - for those willing to bring hoards of GP one way...but then TD has to lug it all back...so TD is faced with a "Token Exchange" issue (Storage, transport, sorting).

Also if available at the CON people who buy and build up GP at the CON can trade it in on the spot...

I like the idea - not fond of the big GP showing up in the sets. As we discussed with just making the SAP Necklace available to any who could "buy" it from TD.

What will happen to the GP traded in? - I mean it could potentially run into the same issues with the "Token Exchange." Not much difference in GP in boxes VS commons/uncommons...

G

Not a clue yet Gary.
Maybe some would wind up in treasure generators, but really who wants to draw a 1GP token as treasure. Some could wind up in the envisioned Scrooge McDuck Swimming Pile. Or just plain be taken out of circulation.

It really does not hurt TD to simply take things out of circulation. With Gold (reserve tokens) you still have the potential value for TD uses and trading, but the players and collectors have a choice whether or not to keep the box full of small denomination gold or convert it to a handfull of tokens. Not as satisfying for sure, but a lot lighter!

Dave

I like the Token idea more than the Notes but if TD is willing to accomodate this, I think its good.

I've actually drawn a 1GP token before...so you want to know what that feels like, just ask (OK I still laugh about it really hard and treasure that darn GP more than some REDS...I'm strange I know).

Sorry I don't have a solution here...if trade-ins happen, I am guessing one of two things to allow them to end up in a Treasure box...

Either sorting of the trade-ins so that 100 tokens in the box are 10GP, 100 tokens are 20GP...etc.

OR just throw them all in - and instead of one token draw, people get one handful! (OK not so good of an idea - but it sure would make a person feel better than getting 1GP.)

I think I have posted this before a while ago, but I remember one of the vendors a couple of years ago, having a "card sculpture" created during the con. It was knocked down the last hour on Sunday (Magic Cards, I think) and for $1 you were given (handed while in line) one uncommon (or rare) card, and allowed to wade into the pile of cards and scoop up what you could in one hand. You could return as many times as you wanted while the cards lasted.

The collected money was donated to charity. I remembered thinking, what a clever way to clean up all the cards, and make it a worthy cause.

When Jeff off handedly mentioned that he was saving all the old tokens (e.g. auction spoils) for something. It immediately came to mind that we could do something like this when the “something” was all over.

I think we would have to do some sorting (maybe looking for greens and reds) if any were placed in the treasure generators, but as I said before, I do not see that it hurts to take them out of circulation.

How bout draw until you get gp or items value totalling more than some arbitrary value? Kinda seems like that is how treasure is generated in DnD, monster has some total value of treasure, roll on this table to find the specific items. Would pretty much require that there be a gp value printed on the equipment tokens, otherwise it would be to cumbersom for the DMs that have to look up the values.

Great. Of course, since I'm driving and not flying, the big announcement I'm waiting for is regarding the Token Exchange.

*sits in corner and futily attempts to wait patiently* It's that darned tokenholic affliction. Once it has you, you're like a rabit dog.
