Actually I was thinking more along the lines of:

A special refined metal token in exchange for 20 bladed weapons (any kind).

The token would have a value of 100GP printed on it so if people wanted to trade there would be a reference. There would be future combos that might use this special metal or maybe using the special metal in the making would reduce the cost of the combo.

Maybe the future combo that required a special metal token would be a cool bladed sword that had some unique property.

So notes/high GP tokens for GOLD...
and refined resource tokens for ITEMS...

I think this sounds like a brilliant idea! My only concern would be if the number of "refined metal tokens" was particularly limited. Ideally I would like to see these tokens be virtually unlimited (In the same way as I would hope the Reserve Tokens would be) so we wouldn't end up in the same "We only have 7 URs for trade but 50 people want them" problem

By virtually unlimited I mean something like: take the total number of commons, have enough "refined metal tokens" so 50% of the commons could be turned in with out running out (I'm assuming pre-orders represent about 50% of the total token distribution))
I think this is a great idea and should be implemented tokens as production resources would be a fantastic idea.

I think it's a great idea, trade in worthless tokens for something that has actual GP value and potential value in a combo token, and is a neat collectible in and of itself. I agree that you should print enough that everyone in a given year that wants to trade for them can trade in for as many as they want (and have items to trade). Maybe each year print new ones using the token design (this year it's the eye), so you can have refined metal tokens from multiple years that can be told apart, but all can be used interchangably in the combo ingredients. That way people collecting these combo tokens could get a set each year.

I like your idea of keeping it basic, allowing a whole class of tokens to be traded in interchangably. Refined metal token for bladed weapons. Maybe a similar token for leather/studded leather/animal hide/reinforced leather tokens. One for metal armor & shields. One for bows & slings. Maybe one for various assorted gear.

I have to say Mike may be right about grouping common tokens together in order to make the trade in this will make it easier for players to trade in there commons in order to get the "resource" tokens making the return of commons to TD easier overall.

You know, there's no reason this should be limited to common tokens. If someone has Rare armor and weapons, they have no use for any uncommon armor and weapons beyond a Great Shield. Perhaps commons count as one point and uncommons count as five points towards the ingredient token. Otherwise it'll be tough to get metal armor for the ingredients as there is none in common other than small shield (and that might be wooden).

Sounds like are just about ready to take all the trading out of the hands of the players at the rate we are going...

I think people will only trade in the lesser tokens, which will still leave plenty of trade room for the top tokens. It still leaves plenty of room for people to trade for all the tokens that they want actually, greater and lesser, this is only for the tokens that they have that are excess to their needs that have no trade value greater than the turn-in. After all, how much of a trading market is there for leather armor, daggers, or even banded mail?

My thoughts on it at least...

I think the suggestion that there be the assurance that there is enough for everyone to get as many of these as they want is not a feature I would want. While it might be desirable in an ideal world, it also might make Dave/Jeff feel this is not worth pursuing. I certainly think that it is a fun idea, and would participate in it, if offered. I like the idea of a suggestion of a value of the item. Right now, those items have virtually no value. You might even consider them for green tokens. There's only so many potions I could ever conceive of using.

I certainly like the idea of including them as an optional ingredient for a combo item.

My guess is that we would have problems with an unlimited supply. I can see making a fixed number with each printing run. So that once or twice a year I would have the ability to get a fixed number of them made.

If I run out, it would only be a matter of 6-12 months before I would be able to make more trades. If we do consider doing this, the first time my guess is that we would be fairly conservative and if we run out, that data would be used to adjust the order for the next time.

I am assuming there also might be ebbs and flows in trading. This first round there might be more trades negotiated with old tokens as people clean out their stores so to speak, then in the future it would be only newer ones, so maybe fewer trades.

Regardless it would make for a cool experiment, and I would get to design new tokens! =D

Win - Win! I hope it happens, and I'll definitely trade in a bunch of tokens if it does =D
