TOPIC: Token Bug

Token Bug 16 years 2 months ago #1

I thought I might share with you all something that happened in our house yesterday that was completely unexpected. Maybe it will be of interest, maybe not.

I have been watching the posts in this forum since February and have been utterly amazed at the vast amount of tokens that I have seen people buy. What possible reason could there be for having that many tokens that are only useful for three days out of the year. Sure it will be cool to have a well outfitted character going into the dungeon, but you can do that with 15 or 20 tokens right? HAH!
My pitiful order of 3 packs of tokens came yesterday. They were waiting for me in this magical chest that any other day would have been a postal service cardboard box. My daughter, who is planning on going through the dungeon with me was hanging on my shoulder asking "what'd we get, what'd we get". Of course I had to let her open 2 of the packs since she is younger then me. I think she forgets I can beat her up, but I let her do it anyway. Why didn't I order an even number?!?
We layed them out on the counter. Orcish rations, short sword, "hey, that will work for your ranger", 50' rope, potion of monk's mead "What does that do?", she asks "hmm, cures 3 points of damage and gives you +4 to save versus mental attacks." I say. "Sweeeet" is her answer. "What else?" silver bell, scroll of bane, crystal decanter, "What are those for?" I have to admit to her something that all dads hate to say "I don't know babe. Maybe you use them to buy stuff". Then I see the good stuff (for me anyway) Half plate armor! Perfect for my Paladin.
So we sorted them out by who gets what. We make another pile of stuff that is not useful to us that someone else might like to have. Then we look for the rest. *insert pitiful looking faces here* "That's it" I tell her. "Are you sure?" "Yup, 1,2,3,4,.....29,30. Yep that's it". "Can we get more?" she asks. I swear this is true on my half plate armor and my salve of restoration. Two little people popped up on my shoulders. On the left was my wife, tapping her toe and looking at me with those eyes that say "Not again! How many dice do you really need? Do you eat them with the combos and the pizza on saturday evening?" and on my right was my daughter. "Dad, we can do this. She won't know. Let's buy more" I had to explain to her that mom gets the credit card statements and she WILL find out.
The wheels start to turn. Ok, if I can some how sneak a few dollars here and there into an off shore account. By the end of April I might be able to order 3 or 4 more packs! Right about here, something snapped in my head. Tokens are a legal and harmless, yet slightly expensive D&D high! Sitting right next to me are 30 TD tokens and three little dice bags that have transfixed me since yesterday at 6 p.m. My daughter has moved on to other 14 year old stuff, but I can't walk more then 20 feet away from the tokens without making sure they are still there when I come back. What is most pitiful is that I have never even been to GenCon or TD before!
I have to apologize to all the collectors here who really have no idea that I had insulted them. While I still don't see myself buying hundreds and hundreds of tokens (at least I hope not), I have the token bug and don't even know why. Hat's off to everyone involved in creating this experience and reminding me of the times my brother and I spent creating live action adventures in a woods behind our house some 20 years ago. At the time we thought we were inovators and some day would rule the D&D world. Real life stepped in and hid that feeling for many years. Now its back. Thanks guys.
And if anyone needs a platinum +1 bracer of the Dragonfist, a regular bracer of the dragonfist, or a platinum scroll of chain lighting and would like to provide ranger or paladin equipment, I can hook you up.

The secret ingredient is the powdered cocaine they sprinkle over every pack.

I always get 10 packs (+2 bonus ) and have been real happy with what I've gotten.
I play a Monk, so far so good anyway, and my bud a Bard that I supply tokens for and I so have plenty of tokens a ranger/paladin could use. I don't have a complete inventory off hand, but theres plenty of common/uncommon stuff and probably a few dup/trip-licate rares I can trade as well. Some would be the wood tokens.

This year I lucked out and got a Bracer of Quivering Palm, so a Dragonfist bracer would be a great addition.

Rsparks410, give it time. Soon enough you will be looking at binders on-line. It happens around the time that you get your first Purp.

Well written, Rsparks. ;)

Just wait until you actually run the dungeon for the first time! Then you'll understand why some of us don't just spend hundreds of dollars on tokens, but hundreds of hours planning and scheming and arranging runs with friends, and building costumes, and reading the forums, and eventually volunteering to DM or work the Tavern, or whatever we can do to make the game more real, and share it with people who haven't yet caught "the bug".

Raven.
My Daughter really wants to dress in costume for our run. I have been a little reluctant to agree with her, but now that she has read you post, I am sunk. I guess if your gonna do it at all, you might as well do it right. And believe me, I have thought about setting up my schedule at GenCon in such a way that I can attempt to do a morning TD run on Fri. or Sat. and then see if I can drop in as a volunteer. Can you volunteer on the spot or do you have to sign up for it in advance.

To all others. Thanks for your responses. I think I am going to bite the bullet and talk to my wife about letting me have one more purchase. I don't know how many more times she will believe me when I say "Honey, I promise, just this one last time. I really need the *insert totally unneeded but irresistable items name here* and my collection will be complete. No more after that. Please?"
I really feel like I could have a decent amount of stuff if I purchase 10 packs with 2 free packs. If not, I should have some cool stuff to trade then. So, when does the next shipment go out?
Yes, you can do walk up volunteering.

And Rsparks,
What size is your daughter? I may have stuff she can borrow to wear on her run. So that way your wife doesn't kill you for all these unexpected expenditures.

Remember you'll also get another pouch of 10 tokens when you arrive to adventure.
Ask the party prior to adventure if they have anything they can share, if you still think that your token selection isn't great. Both times I've gone through TD, tokens have gotten shared carefree by the party to enhance the partys survival rate.

Plus and feel free to correct if I'm mistaken...
Some items can be shared, if that player is not using them or has extras, and the tokens don't have to exchange hands. Armor, cloak and boots for example can get recorded during the pre-adventure set up stage on the tracking sheet, iirc.

Sidenote:
Gary, that's very cool. Hope I get to run with you again this year, and with my new Bracer of QP my monk is ready to slide more 20's. If not, good hunting.

She is a very petite 14 year old. Weighs in at around 105 soaking wet. She is currently sewing a leaf covered cloak that she made herself. She found the leaves at JoAnn ETC for next to nothing. Christmas close-out. Now she has close to 400 leaves to sew on this cloak. Looks great so far.

Okay, question for you.
Do you mean petite in the common sense as in small? Or petite in the clothing sense as in short?
And what class was she looking to play?
Cool project she has with the cloak. It'll look awesome when she's done. :)
