TOPIC: Pay-it-Forward runs?

Re: Pay-it-Forward runs? 8 years 8 months ago #13

That doesn't reflect the wait list people who got slots with generics of course. But it does put a bit of a dent in the newbies could not get tickets thoughts.

On Thursday night when I looked there were no tickets available on the GENCON site. I can not speak for after GENCON.

I'm not sure where on the site that you were looking but from my experience there were many slots on the gencon site for purchase as early as wednesday before gencon. Once the will call and customer service opened that day people were returning their unneeded tickets and they were showing up on the website for me as I was able to purchase an extra ticket that way for a run I had thursday night for one of my friends.

Exactly. I made this point in another thread.

I purchases a ticket for a run from the website sometime Thursday, and there were a tonne of them that had been released at that point.

This is reflected in what I saw when I was coaching.

If you had asked me, I would have said the wait list this year was the best its ever been. I'm now hearing it wasn't quite so awesome but I've yet to hear the particulars so I'm still clinging to my empirical evidence.

I looked at the GENCON site to purchase tickets like everyone else time was Thursday morning around 7 am. There were no tickets available at 0700 Thursday.

Since people were returning tickets and people were purchasing could have been at a time where there were none available. I know for sure I didn't not see anything.

I would like to see one spot clearly marked for wait list next year. In the epilogue room I was asked by one of the veteran players I know where the wait list person was located. All I could say is out in the open area some place. They came back and said there was no wait list person... argh!

Yes I agree a Marked wait list would be key.
Perhaps that's why we see some disparity.

If it weren't for Pay-it-Forward, I would never have ended up here with you fine folks.

In 2013 I was sitting at a table for the last D & D Worlds (I really miss those). At my table was a man named Perry (Hazard, I think) who worked for Wizards but had a TD event immediately after D & D. He asked me if I had ever played, I said no - couldn't justify the cost for an unknown. He said every year he buys full runs and gives a few tickets away with the caveat that if the person liked TD that they too would pay it forward by buying someone a ticket the following year.

Long story short, he got me hooked (of course). Last year I sponsored my friend Brian. This year he sponsored his fiancé Jenn. She's planning on sponsoring someone else next year, etc.

If it weren't for his kindness I wouldn't be here. I tried to sponsor another one of my friends this year but he kept insisting on paying me back after it was over because he had such a good time. :P

We vets do not all have to sponsor someone, I have each year, due to the kindness of Gary Ashwen (spelling)... and I will continue to bring at the minimum one new person a year.

It sounds like a lot of Pay-it-Forward is happening already, which is cool.
I hope it keeps on happening.

The only significant difference I was considering in my original proposal, was to make this a formalized way for vets to "buy" treasure.

It's probably better when people find their own new players to sponsor, because they can take the time (if needed) to explain what TD is like, answer questions, and help with builds, as well as (hopefully) introducing them to a group of TD friends, so they're not thrown to the winds.

But for people who want more treasure pulls, and don't want to deprive the new players of their treasure pulls at the end of the event, this might be a possible solution.

Not sure if it's worth the extra man-hours to do it, though. Unless it could be combined with the Wait-List position?

Thanks for the excellent suggestion, Raven. I hope TD can include it in future years. I doubt there is one system which will satisfy everyone, but this could certainly help with many!

As I have previously stated, I ended-up with a bunch of PUG's this year since the rest of my team had to cancel. I heard many comments from new players happy there was a "veteran" with them. Even one coach commented that I would keep the group alive. While my most fun runs were with Smack-down, Grind, the Green with Envy, and the Greedy Sealed Pack runs, I did have fun on the PUG's and I hope I didn't ruin the runs for anyone. This was my first year with relic tokens and I wanted to at least try them out.
