I'm totally in favor of that, although I think once per room is OK. Even at once per game many would equip it, which just shows how powerful it is.


No, MEC isn't even about the damage for me. It's the most fun token in the game to use as a wizard. There should be more like it. If you cut it down to once per game or once per room it loses all the flavor that makes it so fun. MEC creates the possibility that I can sacrifice myself (even kill my character) to deliver more damage and possibly save the party. It can make for incredibly heroic and epic runs.

What makes MEC so great is the decisions that have to be made to use it, both for builds and in game. And every decision is interesting and fun. There should be more tokens like it.

Doesn't it basically require you to win initiative to benefit much, other than a prep round?

Can someone explain how the locked the ogre out and still did damage?


In the first run of N1 at Origins, we mazed the Ogre to allow us to get all our melee in contact. With full Charms of Awakened Synergy and our Elf Wizard and his staff of power, we were +20 to initiative..And then we took him down on one round of slides and spells.All the combats in that first run were under tuned.

While it takes a well equipped group to achieve that +20 to initiative, its very doable. Hence the bonus monsters started receiving to initiative at Gencon.


I could have sworn this exact scenario came up when the changes to maze were discussed. I thought the outcome was that the +10 from the Elf Wizard only works the first time? On the 2nd, 3rd, etc initiave roll you can't use Staff of Power. It only activates 1/room not 1/combat.


I can't say what the DM did when the Ogre came out of maze. I can only say we won that initiative as well.

I can't say I recall that discussion. But if it lasts the whole room, weren't we still in the same room? Do potions such as brawn "expire" when the monsters goes into maze?

Can you point me to that discussion?


Can't find it at the moment. But it made it into the PHB description of Alertness (end of page 19 / start of page 20). It specifically states that it only works on the first initiative roll.

Groups come through with +10 initiative bonus as a party and an elf wizard with staff of power +2 while other groups have neither.

When enough people complain then changes are made.

Personally, if groups have it too easy so be it. If you want to challenge them then push them towards epic runs.
