Since TD is happening at other cons, would it be better / cheaper next year to attend the other con and do td there instead of attending gencon ? Will the experience be the same? Is easier to get a room at these cons?

The event at the smaller Cons will be a smaller event. The one at GenCon will be bigger and deeper.
The smaller ones are still good, just smaller. Most of the same people are involved.

For hotels, it depends if you want a room at the event or you don't mind commuting a bit. It's easier to get a room in the same hotel for the smaller events but for many it does't matter.

Check this link for more details.

So there is only going to be 1 dungeon at WYC and GHC, while GC will have 2. Deeperdark Redux is described as a " greatest hits." So it could be redone puzzles and combat while the GC is described as "FOUR completely new two-hour adventures for 2016" Four being a combat and puzzle for Into the Deeperdark and a puzzle and combat for Behold her Majesty.

Like others said.

Playing at WYC was cheaper last year, probably will be again this year. But is it "better?" We need more data.

Are you new to TD? Do you plan on just doing one run over the weekend? Is XP irrelevant to you? Is TD the only reason you go to GenCon? If the answer to all these is "yes," then WYC is definitely "better." Each "no" makes it less better in some ways. At some point, based on your point of view, it isn't better.

That said, I love WYC. And, even with four "no" answers, I would struggle with choosing which to attend if I could only go to one con a year. But that's me.

WYC (and presumably Gamehole Con) is more laid back and easier to get tickets (at least that was the case for WYC last year). It is also a time where you might actually be able to talk to Lori & Jeff and many of the bigger players and volunteers. But the event is also much smaller and somewhat lower production value. Of course this is only the second year having a dungeon outside of GenCon so things might improve. Also these smaller conventions things are less expensive and hotels are easier.

If you know you want to do a bunch of TD then it wouldn't hurt to start in the low-stress environment of WYC for sure. But if you think you might only do a single TD adventure then I'd save it for GenCon if you can.

PS - I'm trying to arrange a 9-person newbie run (with me) at GenCon if you are interested.

Not saying Kirk is wrong, because I agree with everything else he said, but I'd flip this bit around. With only one dungeon, you'll be doing the same one over and over, unless you're at GenCon where you have four to choose from. I'd probably find that boring. If you've been around long enough to see the retro rooms already, even more so.

But, you'll save more money running lots at WYC and Gamehole vs GenCon, so you could pay for three and do the fourth for free, sorta. Plus or minus.

Which goes to show it all boils down to personal preference. I don't think either approach is objectively better than the other.

Not go to GenCon!?!

GenCon is so much more than one thing. Ever since I discovered GenCon I've been going since 2005. My family and friends (those that don't go to GC) have a standing order not to plan events/weddings/funerals/etc during GenCon. If they do I won't be there because GenCon comes first. B)

this will be my 3rd gencon. I attended in 2013 and 2014. Did a puzzle and a combat run in 2014 and was very intrigued by the puzzles even though the group I was with weren't able to solve them. I signed up for td volunteering so if I am able I wouldn't mind joining a puzzle run with you if it doesn't conflict with my assigned hours if I get picked.

Im sorry you said there was more to gencon than TD?

Im not sure I follow you. If your talking about that brightly lit area outside the storyscape you dont want to go there. I hear its full of seamonsters.
