TOPIC: Advice Needed

Advice Needed 8 years 3 weeks ago #1

Okay... GenCon 2016 is coming and I find myself in a bit of a pickle. I work retail and my schedule is almost completely random. I put in to have that entire week off as a vacation week (we have to take 7 day vacations and they must always start on Sunday, no taking a day here and there) but was denied because a more senior employee has already requested that week off. I talked to my dept. head and he said he was willing to give me Fri. and Sat. (possibly Sun.) off for the con. Problem is, our store manager rewrites most of the schedules in our store to suit her liking (most the dept. heads complain they don't understand why they bother writing them at all), so there is no guarantee that I will get those two days off.

None of my friends play TD or want to (they say its too expensive) but I love it and would like to make at least one run during the con. This means that I usually have to try for a Pick Up Group (PUG). I am not adverse to PUGs but since I don't have a regular group, I would feel guilty for buying a single slot in a run when an entire group might be able to fill that slot and maybe even need it.

Now I could try Looking For Group (LFG) on the forums for a group but given the circumstances that I have already stated, I am not sure that I should. I missed playing TD in 2014 because no one needed another player during the time slots that I was available. I really don't want to repeat that experience again but to be honest, I am just not sure what to do.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It is 100% no problem to just buy a single slot in a run. I have done it a bunch and really 50+% of players just buy one or two slots. You obviously can't control who you are running with, you can't be sure what class you'll be able to play, and you will most likely run at normal difficulty, but it is still fun 95% of the time. And if you get there 1 hour before your start time you can usually choose and keep the class you selected.

Krik is correct. I normally try and buy one slot in a random group, usually when my wife is on her LASS run with the women :) It's been fun each time I've done it. I'd say outside of this forum most people just buy single tickets, so go for it.

Agree with everyone else. Buy your single ticket(s). I will add you could do both. Buy your PUG ticket so you you got a run, then check the forums for anyone looking for people. If you find a group return your ticket or find someone who will take it off your hands.

I do almost all my runs just by buying single slot tickets as I usually don't have a group to run with depending on the year. If you walk into/find a forum run that suits you better go for it. Either do both or return/trade the ticket. Happens all the time,

Good luck and see you in the dungeon.
We're all the kind of people who enjoy the game on a "meta" level. We like talking about the game year-round. We buy tokens. We enjoy crafting. We get together during the off-season if we can. We are a very skewed demographic that way. -Raven

Depending on you manager, I'd try to impress on her that you're buying some non-refundable tickets for that weekend.

Which is true, as far as the badge goes.

I'd still try to find a group here. Just explain the situation, as you have, and people here will understand you're at the mercy of a tyrant unpredictable boss.

Many buy the whole run, even though they only have 8 or 9, and fill in here. I bought a whole run with only two of us a couple of times, and had no trouble finding 8 to join us... so I know people do it.

The flip side is, if your manager does pull the rug out from under you, you can flip the ticket here.

If you want to feel better about buying a single run, wait a few hours once tickets go live. Generally the folks that are most adamant about getting full slots are there right at launch. After that wave, everyone else is after singles or pairs. Plenty of those around for days. Now, if your time window of availability is very narrow do what you must.

Sorry your job situation sucks.
Good Luck
