They say that the best weapon is the one you never have to use. I respectfully disagree. I prefer the weapon you only have to use once! Oh - and if you really need to think about whether you're going to use the fireball or the + umpty staff of butt-whooping - you're likely to find yourself full of arrows, or fangs, or nasty knives & swords and such. Don't think - just shoot!

I'd support an epic level.

But remember that just a handful of people have done or plan to do nightmare solo. And so far they are all the biggest of big buyers.

The Greedy Sealed Pack Plus One run at WYC last year kind of points in this direction as well.
D&D teaches all the important lessons in life - the low blow, the cheap shot, the back stab, the double cross. - Jerry Marsischky

Let them trap us. We have our swords. - Elric of Melnibone.

You try to get them to play the game, but all they want to do is play the rules. - Ardak Kumerian

I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend - Faramir

Overall, over the last 4 years, out of 2115 reported nightmare runs there have been only 34 players who didn't make it to room 7 (1.6%).

The percentage of rhardcore reporting runners who made it to room 7 is similar.

Both are higher than the proportion of normal reporting runners who make it to room 7.

I think based on this, it's pretty clear that one of these things is true:

  1. The ~33% of reported runs at Nightmare are not representative.
  2. A large proportion of people who report their runs are lying about what room they survived to.
  3. Nightmare is a largely cakewalk for the people who decide to run it, with nearly 99% of players making it to room 7, such that you can count on your fingers the number of nightmare runners who don't make it to room 7 and register their Xp each year.

My money is on number 3

Also, don't forget that HP is entirely on the "honor system."

Players can just as easily lie about their HP (and give themselves unlimited healing), as they can lie about what room they survived to, or how much XP they got.

Players who did Non-Lethal can simply give themselves max XP for having done Hardcore/Nightmare even though they didn't do that difficulty level.
