Hey Gang -

Last year my friend and I flew to GENCON and played TD for the first time. It was fantastic! We are fully committed to coming back for 2019.

When we played in 2018, we simply bought 2 slots for the time of our choice, showed up, grabbed whatever character class was available, and played with random patrons. Some were experienced (loaned us tokens and helped improve our stats) and others had never played before.

For 2019, we are more interested in joining a group that has all played before.

So what are the best strategies for doing this?

In browsing the forums, I saw these two acronyms:

LFO: Looking for others. (Someone has a partial party and is looking for others in that time slot)
LFM: Looking for more. (Someone bought all 10 slots and is now trying to fill them??)

So how does an LFM work?

Do you literally front the money for all 10 ticket ($700 ish) for all three adventures (about $2k on the credit card) and then find people to join your slot?

Is it possible to then transfer people a single ticket and I guess they paypal you the money for that slot?

If all 10 dont get filled, are the remaining slots 100% refundable?

What are the other strategies for joining a decent party and maximizing your adventuring?

LFM means someone has bought all 10 slots for a particular run.

One does not have to play all the adventures, nor play them in order.

Each run is sold independantly.

Inevitably there will be people either LFO or LFM after the initial GenCon ticket blitz, usually some time in late May.

Many people have prearranged groups where one or more people can not make it, and they prefer to fill from the forums first rather than returning tickets to the general supply.

Tickets are NOT fully refundable. There is nearly always a restocking fee. The percentage can vary from Con to Con.

If you're looking to join an established group, and are flexible on when you play at GenCon, you will probably be able to find some tickets on here.

Awesome! Welcome to the addiction!

You've succeeded in step 1, finding the forums. Your best bet for an experienced group lies here, and you can even coordinate classes and difficulty level ahead of time.

Yep! That is exactly how it works. Though often times you'll coordinate at least some portion of the spots ahead of time. For example, I did some LFMs last GenCon, where I already had 6 of the 10 spots filled before posting.

Yep, PayPal, cash, whatever other means you and the other person are comfortable with. GenCon's system allows you to transfer tickets, but you have to first add the other person as a friend in the GenCon system. Or you just both show up at the TD registration desk together.

I'll let someone else chime in on that. luckily I haven't had to deal with getting a refund at GenCon.

Keep an eye out for groups organizing ahead of event registration. Or start your own thread letting people know what you're interested in. Difficulty level, what classes the two of you want to play, whether you want to do all the dungeons or just certain ones, and whether you'd be trying to get runs at certain times/days.

Thank you both! Excellent information!!

I have so many other questions! I dont want to hijack my own thread though.

In reponse to: "You dont have to run them in order, or run all three", I'd like to know:

Why do some folks re-run the same Adventure multiple times? Wouldnt it be hard not to spoil anything if part of your group didnt run it?

Good to know that they can be run out of order. I think this helps change my strategy a bit, I can focus on the time slot I need, instead of making sure I do Adventure 1, then 2, then 3

Some people like to make sure that they have another shot at a puzzle they didn't solve. Some people like to just experience the run with different people. Some people are in search of treasure. And probably other reasons as well...

Some of us are better at not spoiling things than others. But some of the rules changed a couple years ago (you used to only get treasure if you succeeded on 3 specific rooms in each run) and I think we've seen a marked improvement in people not spoiling it since that changed.

Other common reasons for re-running the same dungeon include trying a harder difficulty or a challenge of some form. For example, I've started sponsoring Team Cabal runs, where we buy all 10 slots but only play the 5 casters and run on Nightmare.

Ahh! Good call. Yes, I should have done that. Last year I died on the Rainbow Bridge :( and our team did not solve the challenge with the swords hanging on the wall.

Thanks for the pro tips!

Yeah, TD has recently expanded to more conventions and this past year saw a major upgrade in the dungeon, NPCs, etc. And of course there's more to come!
