TOPIC: What's your Favorite Module or Room from the VTD series?

What's your Favorite Module or Room from the VTD series? 2 years 5 months ago #1

While striking the sets for VTD 6c with a few Golems and Goblins, the topic came up about each of our favorite Modules, Versions (a-b-c) and then Rooms.

I would love to know if any of you had a favorite room or run and why it was memorable.

I really liked Thornbarb Pass. We had a great crew of NPC's & golems and Charlee/Grunnel got to make a few initial appearances.

I feel that module opened the way for player path choices, had some cool puzzles and great combats, and really let us work out a lot of the initial glitches we had with tech in Nymph & Nimblewit.

So...what do you think? Got a favorite? Share with the nerds.

I don't know that I have a favorite module, but my favorite room is the bridge puzzle from the Thornbarb Pass. It was perfectly suited to virtual players, was clever, and still felt like physical TD in that it was mostly physical props and had a great sense of whimsy to it.

I could spend time researching to remember individual rooms, or I can just try to go with off the top of my head.

Favorite dungeons: 2, 3, 5. I preferred some versions over others, but I can't easily recall the differences other than preferring 3A over 3B as I preferred more undead over magical projection.

I really like being able to choose room by room what to do next. 4ABC showed the potential problem of getting locked into one path versus another as I hated rm6 combat pretty quick and wouldn't want to have to do that room to do another room I liked in a dungeon like 5ABC.

I found 3's final room a mixed bag. Very interesting to try to meta but also a pain in the ass for some runs. 3A's version of rm1 was a fight I liked somewhat more than 3B, but the extra room was welcome.

I did like 4's rm7 well enough, as it was interesting to me to meta it. I never got to the point of metaing 2's rm7 combat as did fewer runs back then and sometimes did puzzle.

Vastly preferred 6A to 6B and 6C as I actually liked the d4 puzzle and I liked how 6A had two clearly different incentives depending upon path. 5's two path system was okay and still had metagame considerations. 6B and 6C just felt repetitive.

1 was way too sci-fi for me. I liked the puzzles in 1A, thought they were some of the better ones out of anything. I like that 1B had typed puzzle damage so that DR mattered. But, I just had no connection to anything spaceshippy other than "pretty" viewer puzzle.

5 was the dungeon I thought best put together and monster metaing was enjoyable. I didn't get that tired of it even with C weekend, unlike the exhaustion that was 4C. Wraith room was both good to look at and a completely different experience depending upon such things as how big the party was.

2's bridge was really good, but others liked it more than me. Yeti was something I liked as there was various stuff going on and it felt like we were actually traveling.

Quick off top of thoughts.

Favorite puzzle. Prisoner (sage) in the cage, forget what module this was but that NPC just made the repeat runs so much fun to point where NPC was recognizing some of my party by voice alone.

Favorite combat, Katrina/Harpy room, NPC interactions, interesting combat to me.

Module design, i like the 6c of okay not locked into a path from the start. That said it is a occasional feel bad if one doesn't get to see all the new/different rooms. I'm hoping that before sets got taken down there was video walkthroughs taken and hopefully posted later to show folks who missed out.

I don't like the feel of dungeons getting harder overall/harder to meta'ing against. Used to do 'Bloody Nightmare' runs doing nightmare on 5th lvl BiS rare builds or close to it. We rarely survived but we used to at least get to room 6/7. After our last 2 it just felt too futile even by our masochistic standards.
We're all the kind of people who enjoy the game on a "meta" level. We like talking about the game year-round. We buy tokens. We enjoy crafting. We get together during the off-season if we can. We are a very skewed demographic that way. -Raven

I agree the sage-in-a-cage was the best puzzle in VTD. I think the fog demon was the best combat room.

My favorite puzzle was the hippogriff one to cure the witch of corruption. I just found that one really cleverly designed and the steps of the solve path fit together well. That room overall having multiple valid solve paths was great too.

Favorite combat, any of the early ones with the live NPC that could react and talk back real time. We’ve gotten away from that in recent modules. Yes, I know lockdowns affected this, but I would love to see more live NPCs/monsters return.

Edit: I meant to say the best was the first appearance of Grunnel ;)
Classes Played: Barbarian (65 times), Monk (56), Ranger (33), Rogue (25), Cleric (21), Fighter (13), Druid (12), Paladin (11), Dwarf Fighter (10), Bard (7), Elf Wizard (2), Wizard (2)
