TOPIC: Exact change on Transmutes?

Exact change on Transmutes? 3 months 3 weeks ago #1

How should we handle when we don’t have exact change for transmutes? For example - say a recipe takes 15 mystic silk but I only have 2 10x tokens available. Can I send the 2 10x tokens and get change back?

We really want to avoid situations where the person processing a transmute order has to interpret what you want done. This is why we insist folks send in transmutes in stages rather than in one big lump of multi-staged confusion. For example, if you want to make a Charm of the Fire Newt , it's not okay to include 25 points worth of potions and 25 points worth of miscellaneous gear instead of one Alchemist’s Ink and one Darkwood Plank as part of that recipe. You must send in the exact tokens the recipe calls for, not their equivalent.

Similarly, we'd really prefer it if you didn't send in recipes that require "change" to be made. It gets very confusing when we're verifying the totals. I understand how it might not seem to you* like it's a burden for us to make that accommodation, but trust me, when you have a stack of transmutes that's a high as an elephant's eye, it can be quite challenging to remember who wanted what exception to be made.

*the general "you" not you specifically Fred K.

I totally understand that in practice things may not work as easily as people would hope or like. And I'm totally ok with sending in exact change. I do want to point out that on 9/27/2021 a newsletter was sent out from True Dungeon announcing the new 10x tokens. It contained the following paragraph. I've bolded one sentence that seems to apply the question that was raised.

These will operate just like a "dime" -- only they are worth 10 Trade Tokens
We have added some new 10x Trade Tokens to eight of the lower-level Trade Tokens. Starting in 2022, these tokens (on a special Tan colored chip) will be used to represent 10 Trade tokens. They can be used just like spending a "dime" of a certain Trade token when completing a Transmute recipe. For instance, you can send in one of these tan 10x Alchemist Ink chips for a recipe that calls for 8x Alchemist Ink. We will send back your new Transmuted token, plus you'll get 2x Alchemist Ink standard chips back as change. Also, if you want to convert some of your inventory to these new 10 chips, you could send in, for instance, 60 Minotaur Hide tokens, and you'll receive 6 10x Minotaur Hide tokens back from us.

I bring this up because some people may have seen the newsletter and not read all of the forum updates, which could result in a less than desirable transaction.

Also, is it just me, or are others not able to access old TD newletters from their archive? Fortunately, I still have the newsletter sitting in my email.

Well... all I can say is that sometimes some folks have proclaimed stuff in the past that was either erroneous or had to be changed in the future due to changing circumstances. I can't hack into everyone's Inbox to make edits. All I can do is hope for the best. 🤷‍♂️

I saw that in the newsletter, and heard Jeff make a similar comment on Trent's YouTube show.

And I thought to myself, "Yeah, that's probably not going to work out in practice." So, like smakdown, I decided to try to keep a bunch of singles to be safe. I'm sure I'm going to mess that up at some point, but my goal is to have 10-20 single trade goods of any one kind on hand, and only use the 10x chips when I'm really trying to cut down on bulk. That way I can still make any of the smaller transmutes that use 2-3 of a trade good, or have 5 to use when I need 15, 25, or 35 of something. It's why I'll probably also sometimes send in 7 DP (or whatever) to be made instead of waiting for an even 10.

If you don’t have exact change, I believe you can break down a 10x by sending it in for a transmute having selected 10 of the relevant token and putting a note on your order.

At least that’s how it works with reserve bars.

I would think so too. Send in 3 10x DP, get 30 DP back. Much like GP, it makes it so you have to transmute twice, but still.

It is best to send in the exact amounts if possible. I always try to make it easier on the staff verifying the transmutes. IMO

You definitely may break 10x's down into singles--you don't even need to write a note. Just order ten* of the relevant Trade tokens and in the bag with the slip put the 10x version.

*or some multiple of 10 if you want to break down more than one 10x

There is no need to "prove me wrong" because I'm not disputing what was said in the past. I'm asking y'all to please understand that sometimes things get said which in hindsight perhaps could/should have been said differently. Surely this is not the first time you've encountered such a phenomenon.

A question was asked. I gave an answer. I explained why the answer is what it is. If you choose to disregard that answer, I suppose there's not much I can do about that.
