things change

Indeed they do.

A couple points, if I may:
  1. That post was made over six years ago.
  2. TD vets can attest that sometimes plans get announced by certain people that for a multitude of reasons get changed.
If one would like to manage one's expectations, my suggestion would be to take proclamations made for items/events in the far future with a grain huge chunk of salt.

Transmuted Elder Orb of Dragonkind allows Duplicate Orbs in Recipe 2 years 3 months ago #14

As soon as the official recipe was out - I looked it up and worked out solutions accordingly. I had noticed the change last year and gathered orbs accordingly assuming several of the same would work. I passed this message to quite a few others who got 5 orbs of the most recent kind as well. I suspect that now it is becoming more widely known we'll see orbs go for a bit more.

I'm sure some were still getting individual year orbs over the past year or two and could be annoyed. It wouldn't be fair to change the recipe this late, though as I know over a dozen people doing duplicates. I am building both so duplicates was a great solution to save a few $K.

Perhaps one compromise solution would be to put orbs 1,2, and 3 into the treasure mix to give people who got individual orbs a chance to draw the rest to get a full set?

I'm not transmuting any Dragon Orbs but I understand the frustration of people that thought it was five different ones (it seems that was a reasonable expectation prior to the September 2021 recipe based on previous statements). As a compromise, maybe the recipe could have four different Orbs or 5 of any orb?

That feels pretty complicated.
I don't begrudge anyone their orbs. I wish I had noticed the "final recipe" when it first became available, but so it goes.

Alternatively, maybe if you transmute using 5 different orbs, you get some kind of bonus item? Something that would make the 5-different transmute more valuable than the 5-same transmute, without being too over the top.

if it went from any 5 (including duplicates) to 5 different ones, I could see the issues. you can still make it if you have 5 unique

So what am i missing. Why is this an issue?

As someone who likely spent more money than he needed to in order to get 5 different orbs, this doesn't really upset me. As someone who did not have the means to jump into this 7 years ago, I was just happy to be able to get 5 orbs. If this change means more people can do the transmute, then that's probably a good thing.

I think I'd be more upset if having all 8 orbs results in some legendary level token. That would also run contrary to statements made a long time ago. I guess I didn't take those statements with a chunk of salt back then when trying to prioritize my token purchases.

I think some people are saying that it was a lot more expensive to get five different orbs than it would have been to get any five (like five from this year for example).

no it wouldn't have. The price would have been higher. Yes 2020 Orb may have sold for 300$ if you look back, but if 10 more people were after it, it would have probably been 500$+

I don't know if anyone is upset or anything. I was just pointing out WHERE the thought came from after you pointed out when the discussion of the exact recipe started that it was any. Again I have no dog in this fight, that I don't think is a fight. Just pointing out where people did get the idea that it was 5 unique. It was 6 years ago, then some people have been planning that way for 6 years. I don't think it fair to begrudge anyone that may have used the only information they had to make their decisions upon when the information is from Jeff and then quoted by you.

I certainly don't feel like you and I were/are fighting, jedibcg. You were showing examples to back up your perspective and I was doing that as well. No malice or bitterness was perceived or intended.
As far as my previously alluded to saline suggestion goes, this isn't the first time something was said by someone in the distant past that changed in the future. Anyone remember when forumites pressured someone into proclaiming what the Special and AoW effects would be multiple years in advance? Remember how many of them actually panned out that way? Even though I'm certain that someone's heart was in the right place and the desire to appease one's fans is understandable, there are forces over which we have little or no control. When circumstances internal or external dictate plans have to be changed, they are going to change and there will be people who experience some level of disappointment. This disappointment could range from, "Hmm, bummer. Oh well, no big whup" to a complete and total conniption. The intention of my previous caution was for folks to gird themselves against possible future changes and to point out that the more distant the proclamation is, the more likely it is to change. I'm trying to be helpful. If one doesn't wish to take my advice, don't take it.

Yeah I am in this boat. I had zero Orbs. Then after I saw the recipe allowed duplicates, I decided to collect them, and do have 5 today.

I still don't know if that was a good decision without knowing what the dang thing does :P
