In person and Virtual are two very unique experiences. Planned and Pug are two very different experiences. Best free advice, get there 30 minutes early for your run, go to the bathroom prior to showing up, and the walk from the vendor hall to the Arena is about 10 minutes. If you’re organizing prior the 30 minute part can come down, as it is your first time early is better so you can read the release before signing. Also let them now you’re running your first dungeon! The first time is an experience, and they might help you get where you need to be a bit more.

PS: before you enter the dungeon area, there in the past have been large groups of mingling folk in chairs, let them know you’ve never run before, Jeff asked us to do a thing that should help you out.

Welcome!

cody,

you have gotten a lot of good advice. hopefully it helped you with your questions. more than likely you still have unanswered questions. your original post just said you are looking for a group to join and to help prepare you.

please let us know where you are standing for now.

I was mainly looking for a group because I wasn’t sure if I just needed to pick an event time at GenCon and hope the group is ok with a Newb and willing to help me out, or if it was better to find a group and coordinate ahead of time. I do appreciate all of the feedback I have received.

Newer player chiming in here. I just started this past year at game hole con with my own tokens. Had played before with a friends stuff.

Join anytime that you can find and then look for the adventuring group meetup in the forums. there you can discuss classes being played and which level. If the group wants a higher level, they more than likely will have stuff to loan for you. I went to GHC with a buddy and we met some awesome people that helped us out. This community is small but mighty and caring.

There are some groups that run together consistently, but I have found many float around and play with multiple groups or just sign up for a time that works and make new friends.

Good luck and hope to see you on a run!

my regular group is "usually" full, but....
we love new players and have more than enough tokens to loan. we usually have runs all through the con, but our steady yearly runs are around 2:00pm on friday and saturday. i'll check for commitments from the regulars and see what we can do for you. :)

Hi there! I'm new-ish as well. Gotten to do one in person once and then a few VTD's. I will be going to Gen Con for the first time and don't have a group either. I would love to join you!

Welcome, Lincilla!

I echo the advice others have given--check out the "how-to" videos, the VTD preview videos, and consider asking Merlin's Wishing Well for a free starter kit. You absolutely do not have to read the Player's Handbook before you play, but that's another source of good information. Also check out one (or more) of the free character generators. There's an app (IOS or Android), website, and an Excel spreadsheet. Playing around with the character generators can give you a sense of how various tokens impact your character's stats. For example, if you character has an even CON, a token that adds +1 CON won't bump your stats. But if you're on an odd CON, a +1 CON token could be really helpful.

In terms of playing the first time, you've seen the split of opinion about whether VTD is a good intro or not. YMMV. Whether you're going for virtual or in-person, there are two ways to end up in a group. One is to buy a ticket for a time slot that works for you, and just take your chances about who else is in that group. If you have a few tokens and little bit of knowledge, you should be ok to play on Normal. If you check the forums before the run, you might find (or start) a thread for the run you are on, and can learn more about who you're playing with--their experience level, tokens available to loan, etc. The second option is to not buy a ticket yourself, but wait until tickets have gone on sale and come here to see who is LFM (Looking for More) or LFO (Looking for Others). LFM is the forum designation for someone who has all 10 tickets for a run but has empty slots they are looking to fill with other players. LFO is the designation for someone who bought some tickets to the run, and would like to know who else has a ticket, or alert people to unsold tickets that would round out the group. (A LFO post about a sold-out run wouldn't help unless you're one of the ticket holders, but LFO saying "I see 6/10 tickets are sold, here's who we are, anyone else want to buy a ticket and join us?" would let you know what you are getting yourself into.) LFM and LFO posts typically say what level the group plans to play, which classes are taken, and whether they have tokens to loan.

By posting here, you may also hear directly from people who like introducing players to the game and actively seek out new folks to add to their groups.

Thanks so much! But I drank the Kool-Aid after I did Pax South. I....kind of went overboard and am geared pretty well. I have done most of the VTD's and while they are not the same as in-person I do think they are very fun. I agree fully with posting here in the forums. I have made some great friends that way. Looking forward to meeting everyone in person!! But most of them already have their groups set. So finding one of my own will be really fun too!
