TOPIC: Quick Druid VTD question

So when playing Druid VTD, i use the Character Creator. I was trying to figure out Spell Surge. I selected Spell Surge and chose add to Spell Sequence, then went to Call Lightning, passed the skill test and went to add to spell sequence.
However, when I clicked "execute spell sequence" on the main result space it said "Spell Damage:0" and neither surge nor lightning were checked.

What did I do wrong?
We are playing Sunday and I want to get this right.

Don't add Spell Surge to the sequence, just cast it normally and then add the actual spell to a sequence.

Adding on, you don’t have to cast either as a sequence the last time
I did it. You just click spell surge (then cast spell), and then click your spell (then cast spell).

The spell surge shouldn’t consume your action allowing you to then cast a spell.

It does take a free action to use spell surge so you can’t go too crazy with sequences like mages can with instant spells.

(PHB p17 is mum on this issue, but PHB p42 specifically calls out spell surge as an "example" of a Free Action)

Yeah, I learned the hard way and was politely told by the DM that I couldn’t Spell surge Lightning and Spell Storing a second Lightning in the same round. Apparently that is a little too much lightning for us

That's pretty lame I would think spell surge would be an instant action. I've been doing it wrong by spell surging ONCE per game then Charm of Spell storing ONCE per game because it's fun to get a big hit. Thankfully no DM ruined it for me in the dungeon because I would have thrown a fucking fit if I got told something that stupid.
