TOPIC: Thoughts on True Dungeon GENCON Adventures

Thoughts on True Dungeon GENCON Adventures 3 weeks 4 days ago #13

If I get tickets I will be happy. If not I will be less happy. I was REALLY hoping Origins was going to be a full production again.

Warning mild rant incoming.

I have had some time to think about and I have to say I am disappointed. Not disappointed in a Full dungeon that is starter only, fortunately it is a dungeon I have done before so I can skip. Not disappointed in a $68 starter dungeon that is only 4 rooms, fortunately I can play it at Origins for $20 less. Not disappoint that Crimson Tide is a repeat, fortunately I got to play it at GHC last year. I am disappointed that though we are getting 3.5 dungeons for Gen Con, we are only really getting less than 2 dungeons worth of new content for 2024. 1 Full new content for Viper. 4 Rooms with Golden Obelisk, and 1 new puzzle in each of the others means only 13 total new rooms. That disappoints me. I personally would rather see 2 new dungeons, but I understand that 2 dungeons vs 3.5 is less tickets but I just would rather be able to see all the new content together vs having to pay full price on 2 dungeons to see 1 new room. In years past I probably would have just bit the bullet and shelled out the money to see the 2 other rooms, but really don't feel it is worth it anymore. My two cents. Not saying it isn't worth it for anyone else just me.

I think a fair argument might be made that VTD is adding new rooms, except that it is not always as we have seen repeat puzzles in VTD this year. I do hope everyone that gets to do the dungeons they want to do and they enjoy those dungeons. I hope I am able to snag a single run of Viper for my group, but the days of making sure I see all the content are gone for me, I just don't see the value of spending $100+ for 12 minutes in a new room. Again not knocking anyone that does. More power to you.

Dune Viper is definitely going to be the hot ticket. I'll have played the other 3 dungeons already prior to Gen Con.

I'll still do each dungeon once (maybe twice for Viper).
Classes Played: Barbarian (65 times), Monk (56), Ranger (33), Rogue (25), Cleric (21), Fighter (13), Druid (12), Paladin (11), Dwarf Fighter (10), Bard (7), Elf Wizard (2), Wizard (2)

I am excited for in person TD and will play all of the runs I can squeeze into what I am sure will be a very busy GenCon schedule.

I am pretty excited for what is being offered. I will try to play them all. I've not had the best of luck getting tickets in the past, but we always manage to get something. Last year I was checking available tickets and was able to get ToT 30 minutes before the event started, so that was exciting.

Cary Kelly wrote: I’m worried that Dune Viper is going to sell out instantly and too hard to get tix. With a multi path I’d like to run at least twice - but I see all the hardcore players taking those up so only the sealed runs are left.

This is my fear as well and why I am "meh" on the lineup. My family was completely shut out of ToT last year, which was disappointing after playing the entire VTD series. Yes, we can play this year, but only as a sealed deck. That doesn't interest us as much. I am planning to do one ToT run only because I heard such great things about it last year. I really hoped ToT would be run at GHC last year, but no luck.

I played CotCI multiple times last year at various Cons so no interest in running again.

That leaves one dungeon that I am really excited about, but I have already resigned myself that I probably won't get a ticket. So yeah, meh.

We shall see. I love TD and I have a lot of money and time invested in it. But the prices are ridiculous. More so when you are really only getting one brand new dungeon. And I am sure that it will cost more than last year, which I don't need to go into my opinion on that matter.

But yeah it seems like you will have one hot ticket run, hopefully I will get a run with my friends. But who knows?

As I said on Trent's show last week, the pandemic really messed up our event offers for a few years. I think we almost back to pre-pandemic volunteer levels, and now things are almost back to normal. Next year, we should finally be able to return to our usual policy of premiering three events at Gen Con. I am hoping to premiere one of them at Origins -- if all goes well this year.

Thank you all for your support these past few difficult years, and I look forward to doing a massive Viking-themed adventure arc in 2025. It will start with VTD which will build to 3-4 new adventures at Gen Con. It should be a bunch of fun.

That sounds amazing, Jeff! I'm very happy with True Dungeon at GENCON this year, there are two Dungeons my group hasn't played to pick from, and hopefully the two sealed pack adventures will bring a ton of new players into True Dungeon. If it works out, maybe you should have a sealed pack adventure every year at GENCON.

My nephew from New Zealand will be at GENCON with us this year, he's been looking forward to playing True Dungeon again since he first played nearly 15 years ago. :)

I live faraway from the midwest in Texas so I appreciate being able to do the adventures that are from Gamehole Con and such at Gen Con.

Will Golden Obelisk be the same as San Japan? If so I will hold off on that one until San Antonio.

Edit: never mind I see it now on the Con-Quest page.

Great to hear vol levels are returning to normal. Can't wait to see gencon, and others, back in full force :)

Hoping to play all four including/especially Dune Viper twice with different path choices, in addition to FT volunteering! (wish me luck, LOL)

Selfishly I miss the days when tickets were explicitly sold as Puzzle or Combat focused, to make covering all the bases easier. I very nearly didn't get to see ToT combat room 3 last year... and I'm grateful I eventually did, because it was awesome! (of course, I probably would have gotten a second chance this year as I imagine it'll make the cut for redux, but I didn't know that at the time)

The obvious downside of preset path choices would of course be if one option is vastly more popular than the other in practice. I wonder if anyone kept track last year? Maybe we should for Dune Viper this year.
