Relay For Life 13 years 11 months ago #1

My county had their Relay For Life last night. Other than some issues with torrential rain during the afternoon setup time, things went incredibly well. Right now we are sitting at approximately 295,000 dollars raised over the course of the year and at the event for the American Cancer Society. By the time it's all said and done we should be over 300,000 dollars. If that happens then Warren County should be the #1 relay in the state of Kentucky.

I'm curious to know just how many of my fellow TD players and volunteers participate in Relay For Life.

Kim

Congrats, Kim! It's great that you were able to participate in the relay, and Warren County has raised such a large amount for the Cancer Society.

I have supported a local Relay for Life team for the last 3 years (a friend's aunt is very involved in it) and I just found out that my manager at work also participated for the first time this year. I think I will support her team as well next year, as she says she had a great time and can't wait to do it again.

'Relay' sounds ominous. I assume it's another thing raising money through walking or running or some sort of physical exertion. I'd just like to say I object to all of these charities and organizations requiring people to run or walk or swim or bike or whatever. Besides, studies show americans are getting less and less exercise nowadays and they're missing out on an opportunity to make even more money. Just think if you could get people to donate money based on every hour of reality tv a volunteer watched or something like Lounging for Life. I could lounge forever but running is about flat out.

Relay For Life is a great event. You should go to Relay next year. It's a public event and there are always a number of things to do.

Kim

Relay For Life isn't a run. Relays are either a 12 hour event or 24 event depending on the community. The idea is that the teams that participate have at least one team member walking the track at all times. The reason they are overnight events is that cancer doesn't stop just because it's nighttime. Also, the overnight hours are some of the hardest for cancer patients undergoing treatment.

There are always fun activities going on at Relay and there's always great food at Relay. Attending Relay is a really great way to support a great cause and a way to get to know your community better.

Kim

We had a Relay for Life event at my school, and a team made of of students and teachers. I didn't do it, b/c I was training for the marathon with Team in Training.
That's cool that your school had a Relay event. A number of schools in our area participate not only in the main Relay For Life event but also have mini Relays at their schools in order to fundraise.

Kim
Henwy - I did Relay this year, and they don't come any lazier than me. Luckily my team had a guy that was determined to walk a marathon, and a lady that did 16 miles. I barely had to get out of my chair. My official team job was "snarky comments". It was a great time!

Hey, and they even sold *cupcakes* at my Relay...

Thanks! Between the relay in my county and the one in Binia's just those two relays have raised almost half a million dollars for the American Cancer Society.

Kim
