TOPIC: The "birthing" a web service

The "birthing" a web service 18 years 5 months ago #1

I'm about to launch a new web service on the 14th. Its not as exciting as Lori & Jeff having a kid but its about the same amount of work (ducks as wife slaps me on the head...)

Its called LookLater and I have a pre-beta demo that you can try online at:

http://looklater.com/demo.html

LookLater's motto is "instant searchable bookmarks". Try out the demo if you get a chance and let me know what you think.

Thanks.

Doug,

I checked it out and it is a cool concept. I am curious, will this be a plug-in for browsers or an application in windows? Or some function imbedded within websites?

Either way, looks good.

The initial release next Monday is going to be a simple bookmarklet that lives in your links bar that you would first need to click to enable a page for LookLater functionality. A quick follow-on release is going to come with a Firefox extension and a Explorer BHO that basically just runs the bookmarklet for every page that you visit.

Im updating the demo page text today with this info and more.

Thanks for checking it out.

Very cool concept.

Normally when I'm browsing, I just open interesting links as a new tab (on Safari) or in a background window, and get back to them later. But I can't count the times I've lost a treasure trove of fascinating links because my toddler hit the power/reset button while I stepped away from the computer for a moment.

How do you disable the LookLater link-marking system?
Once I was done playing with saving the links, I wanted to actually click a couple links, but it would just open a script box to say "Use 'S' and click to save the link" and then not let me follow the link properly.

(I'm running Safari, on a Mac, if that makes any difference in answering my question.)

The popup you saw is only for the demo -- normally the click would go through -- the real version only intercepts it if you have the 'S' key down.

I now have a server side demo up:

looklater.com/pbdemo/view

It shows how you would interact with the bookmarks after you have saved them. Check it out if you get a chance.
