TOPIC: If you like Sci-fi and don't know what 'Firefly' is...

If you haven't experienced Firefly the tv series, which was on back in 2001 for only one season, then you are truly missing the best sci-fi show to hit the tv screen.

A number of months ago, the sci-fi channel bought the rights to show re-runs of a series called Firefly that ran on Fox for only one season. I started watching it and could NOT believe how completely hooked I was watching this series. I went out and bought the series on DVD (which has been in Amazon.com's top 10 dvd sales since Sci-fi started airing it.) I could not believe how absolutely attached to every character I got. I later read everything about it and learned how fox didn't even air the pilot first, ran the episodes out of order, etc. and no one knew what the heck the point of the show was when they ran it. Basically dooming the show. Idiots.

Since the airing on Sci-fi the fan base of this show went through the roof. They made a movie that came out recently called Serenity. Unfortuantely it didn't make a ton of money, since not enough people knew what this show is yet. But having seen the series, the movie was excellent.

My point to all this is, if you like sci-fi, I strongly urge you to go out and rent this show, or watch for it to start over again on Sci-fi who continues to run it!

Serenity, was actually one of two movies that I got to see in theatres this year.
Very enjoyable!
My friend told me a bit about the series before we watched the movie. But I thought with the way they did the movie you didn't have to have seen the series before hand. But I'm sure if you did it was all the moreso enjoyable.

I wonder since its gotten picked up and gotten some press if maybe they will revive the show.
Never know.

There is a lot of speculation over whether the series would be revived if the movie was successful. Joss Whedon has pretty much implied he would be more likely to make a few sequels to the movie.

The movie was made so someone who knew nothing about Firefly could follow/enjoy it, but there were definitely some inside jokes that meant more for those who has watched the series.

SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Highlight the area below if you want to see what it says.

I think the deaths of Book and Wash were especially more emotional for those of us who had grown so attached to them watching the series.

ellindar,

Agreed! I am part of the "second wave" of Firefly fans. I missed it when it was on T.V. but for the last month or so, my friend has been bringing in his DVDs to work and we have been watching the shows at lunch. I was hooked.

Wow, what a show, especially the well-timed humor and one-liners in some of the scenes. Jayne has to be one of my favorites.

It is a shame really that it wasn't given time to get off the ground. But honestly, I think the marketing approach wasn't what it should have been. It was marketed as "A Western in Space" which too me sounds corny (probably why I missed it on TV). And the name "Firefly" doesn't help clarify whether this is a western or a sci-fi show which are two VERY different crowds. It would have been far better to just advertise it as a original Sci-Fi epic about renegade travelers.

Haven't seen the movie yet but it is being shipped. Should arrive sometime next year. ;)

Lesimony, without spoiling back I'd like to just say that not only emotional but unexpected and a bit frustrating!

As for the series being revived... I've been following all the rumors, speculation, Joss's comments, etc. IMO only, I would say I doubt we see the series again and it kills me. However, what I see coming from this is two or three 'made for sci-fi channel' movies that will also be released on DVD. Again, just my opinion. But at this point I'll take anything I can get of it. It's been one of the most refreshing shows I've seen in a really long time.

Dequils, Jayne definitely got the best one liners throughout the season. Though I gotta go with the Captain myself. Nathan plays that part so perfect. I agree that between FOX's marketing it as a western in space combined with the random airings of the episodes without a pilot was just ridiculous. Killed it before it had a shot.

(I thought I'd jump on this bandwagon late here...)

I am also one of those "second-run" raving fans. I started watching the series when it first came out... however some genius executives at FOX back then decided they knew better than J. Wheldon and rearranged the order they aired. It didn't work because the storyline sequence was broken so many points didn't make sense. I was one of the many who lost interest due to this apparent lack of continuity.

Well, the rerelease this year did it in the proper order and I was hooked fully! Great sense of humor. Personally I'm an odd ball and love both Westerns (grew up on them) and Sci-fi, so it was a perfect meld for me!!

It has some great one-liners!!! Especially Jayne. One of my personal favorites:
"Why you all order a dead guy?"
(Stated as he looks down at the camera wearing just a god awful goofy hat.)

Perhaps my top choice of humorous scenarios is when Captain Reynolds has just finished a sword duel with the antagonist. I'll not ruin it, but it was quite funny. They do such a good job catching you off guard.

Oh... and they are having a Firefly marathon on Fri, Jan 6. 12 consecutive episodes. TiVo that if you can!

That is tempting, especially since you can skip past the annoying commercials.

So basically, they're showing the entire series.

Am I the only one who didn't like the show??

And I usually like Joss Whedon.

Maybe I'll try watching a couple during the marathon and see if they are bad or I just wasn't paying close enough attention on the few I did see.

I got the Serenity DVD for christmas. We watched it last night (we also saw it in the theater). Some of the outtakes are pretty funny.
