I am relieved to see that Gen Con has issued a formal statement regarding Indiana's SB101--the Religious "Freedom Restoration" Act, or as it's more accurately described, the Right to Discriminate Act.

There is also a thread about it on the official Gen Con forums .

As a member of the community this bill is designed to discriminate against, it makes me question if I will continue to feed money into a state that officially classifies me as something other than a full human being.

I know it's not a law yet, but the guv is expected to sign the bill. I really hope those predictions don't come true.
Have you looked it up in the TDb ?
Please post TDb corrections in this thread .

As a citizen of Indiana, I am appalled. I am hoping he doesn't sign this hateful bill.

I think this is a particularly disgusting bill (soon to be a law). Another reason for GC to consider leaving.

As someone that lives in Indy but not a Hoosier I applaud Gen Con and hope the follow-up on this.

I have to admit, not being from Indiana, I know nothing about this bill, but - you are all very naughty for bringing politics onto the True Dungeon forum....

and the bouncer started it no less....

As a resident of Arizona (the lovely creator of SB 1070) I have to applaud GenCon for making this stand.

Laws like this are becoming more and more common. The fact that legislators still do it shows they don't fear losing their office over it. I hope the loss of $50 million in annual monetary gains is enough to let the people of Indiana realize they need to be wiser about who they elect and let stay in office.

I wasn't aware of this bill until the GENCON letter, but after looking into it, it's surprising that it's not an outlier, but instead is modeled after a 1993 Federal Law and 19 similar State Laws (with several more States considering similar legislation). That makes the Federal Government and about half the States either with this type of legislation in place or considering it.

I'm definitely against discrimination of any kind. Does anyone know if there are any examples under the Federal Law or the other 19 State Laws of businesses refusing service to any groups based on these laws? I know several organizations used the Federal Law to not have to provide contraceptives as part of the Affordable Health Care Act.

My gut instinct here says you answered your own question RE:contraceptives.

But yes, they've used it in places like bakeries (and weddings) to deny service to gay couples.

My question was wondering if specific individuals have been denied service in restaurants or similar businesses. I'd be interested in reading up on them, if anyone has links to examples.

I don't have links but I do remember it coming up on the news a few times where a wedding planner had refused to work with a gay couple and where a baker had refused to create a wedding cake for a gay couple. I'm sure someone out there has links

As a former Hoosier I can tell you the legislature is prone to doing odd things from time to time.

In the 1800s it is said a bill was nearly passed to establish the value of pi as 3. Not quite accurate, the bill would have recognized a concept that only worked if the value of pi was 3.

They did pass a bill at one point that nearly lost them their federal highway funding. Only the skilled intervention of Gov. Bowen averted that fiasco.
