TOPIC: Flying with Tokens

Flying with Tokens 2 years 5 months ago #1

It's been a while since I traveled by air, and even so, I've never attempted to take tokens through security in my carry-on. I'm trying to save some time and a bit of money by not checking a bag, but I'm wondering if the tokens will be a problem for TSA... Has anyone ever had an issue taking tokens in their carry on?

I get stopped every time and asked a bunch of questions - usually they are just super curious and want to know about the game. But it has never been a problem. Just budget a few extra minutes while they look at them and your carry on.

High chance you'll be stopped. They'll search any token bags/binders by hand for a few minutes and you'll be on your way.

If I have a small number of tokens, I place them in an easy to get to exterior pocket and when searched explain that I have poker chips in my bag. When I have a large number of tokens, I just hope that another player went through right before me and already answered their questions.

It has never been a problem, but I do get stopped over 50% of the time.

I had TSA search it and they kinda turned and looked at me when they opened the bag and said "Coin collector" I replied "Sure" it saved a little time on explaining. I didn't want to say something about please don't look at my hammer or chain mail in there!!!

I just tell them I have some thing that’s basically poker chips in the bag. They didn’t bother looking

On the way out, I usually get stopped and asked a quick question about them "they're tokens for a game". On the way home it's usually, "Oh, another one of you guys."

I just lay my token binders out in the gray tray in plain view with one cover flipped open. They give a puzzled wtf look and I say "game tokens",,, then they say a polite version of "ok,,, so you're a weirdo but not a terrorist,,, move along". 😆😆😆

I’ve only flown with tokens once, but this is exactly what happened. A friend drove to Origins and was our token mule that year, but my husband I flew to Columbus. For whatever reason, I still had a few tokens in my bag on the way home. The TSA guy working the metal detector started to ask what the poker chip-like items were, and another TSA guy was like, “Oh, were you here for the convention? Are those tokens for that one game?” I said yes and silently thanked whatever TD player had gone through that line before me.

Considering that I've been to every Origins ever held at Columbus,,, there's a "one in less than get hit by a lightning bolt " chance that player could have been me. :) :)
