During a discussion about whether or not a ring should occupy a finger slot we got derailed into a discussion of alcohol. It got me curious, so I wanted to put out a general question to everyone: What is your spirit of choice?

Personally, I love whiskey, especially bourbon. It's something that when it's bad it's like drinking paint thinner, but even mid-shelf varieties have a lovely smoothness and depth to them. If I'm drinking straight that's what I go for 100% of the time.

That's not to say that other spirits don't have their place. Tequila is great in cocktails, and liquors can be lovely. Vodka is great if you don't want to know that you're drinking. But if I was trapped on a desert island and could only have one spirit to warm me, it'd be a nice bourbon.

I tend to favor gin for flavor, but drink far more vodka than anything else.

Scotch is my go to, particularly Speysides, but I enjoy most whiskeys.

Bourbon is having a moment. It’s great, but former shelf staples aren’t worth 2x-3x asking price.

Rye is still an underrated champ.

Gin is wonderful. It’s like vodka after it grew up and got a nice apartment in Williamsburg.

If I have someone visiting me in Chicago and want to show them a “good” time, Malört is the go to.

Not a big drinker, but mead and cider are really really tempting sometimes.

Whisky treats me well. I can drink a lot of it in an evening and feel fine in the morning. Therefore it's my go to spirit. I can and do drink all other types of alcohol. But never mix types anymore. If I'm drinking beer, I stick with beer. Drinking whiskey? No gin, vodka or beer.

But a good bourbon or rye are right up there. I probably have 50+ bottles around the house. I'll need to do an inventory at some point.

I do love gin....I have a very good tequila I particularly like straight that I've found....vodka and rum are good with some level of mixer...I just can't get into whiskey and bourbon overall, but there is a chance I haven't been exposed to a good one. I do have a liquor goggle doc for our inventory, in case there was any wonder.

I pretty much don't drink at all. Once or twice a year I might have a wine cooler or some fruity type drink. It's a disappointment for my wife, who is an oenophile, but at least she has a driver always available when we visit vineyards!

Way more love for gin than I was expecting. I do get it though, good gin can be lovely. It has to be good gin though, bad gin tastes like an air freshener.

I genuinely don't get the love for Rye though. To me it's always tasted like someone wanted to make normal whiskey, but decided to make it taste slightly worse as an experiment. Like, it's not terrible, but it tastes deliberately worse to me.

I'm more beer aristocrat than anything as one TD friend called me years ago. Give me dark, sour, or coffee and i'm content.

For spirits, my goto is Jameson's coldbrew or there's a great honey whisky from a distillery in Cincinnati. A given 5th of liquor will last me years though as i drink so comparatively little.

When i visited New Holland i fell in more than mild fascination with their amber rum and their bourbon barrel gin (i normally can't stand gin)

On the other hand i've been known to play with a brew kettle once in a while and once in a great while some my batches (beer, mead, wine) are even drinkable.

I tend toward whiskeys and bourbons myself. I agree with Josh, Rye whiskeys are a deterrent for me, and have never enjoyed that flavor in my mouth.
If I had to make a top down list, I'd probably go bourbon/whiskey, rum, tequila, gin, vodka. And I'm basic, I want all of those either straight or on ice.

As far as beers go, I prefer darker beers, and will most likely stick with any stout on a menu. And I will stay away from most ciders and sours, mostly because they tend to taste like acid reflux to me.
