TOPIC: Building a game room

Building a game room 2 months 1 week ago #1

So probably come Spring, if all goes to plan (which it won't), we are planning on having a house built. That said I am going to have a game room.
But how big should it be? I am not sure what size a typical bedroom is, so I don't have much to go on.
I figure an 8x4 game table, good lighting, as well as optional indirect lighting for RPG's, a sizable shelf for games and a closet.
So what size room should I be figuring for?

Maybe if anyone has a game room with hints or tips

Depends on how much you want in it, and how well centered you want things.

The average bedroom size is typically between 10x10 to 12x12, with masters typically being a fair amount larger at like 14x14ish. There are a lot of variations in this, and it depends on the year too, growing up I had a 8x10 bedroom, and it worked fine for a kid.

For a game room, I'd think the size of a large dining room. Assuming you want shelves in your room I'd probably say at least 17x13. My reasoning being 8x4 gaming table, 1.5ft each side for possible shelving, so we'd have like 11x7 of "used" space, leaving 3ft for comfortable walking paths on every side.

I am not an architect or interior designer, this was just me looking at my own dining room (which is the board game room) thinking our 2.5ft walkways are narrow for some of our larger friends, especially when people are sitting at the table.

A bit of context, a hallway is required to be 3ft minimum by code, though 42" (3.5ft) is the norm. And obviously I am not saying make every wall into a bookshelf, but planning for such gives you breathing room to decorate as you please

I'd also suggest leaving room to grow, as most of us can't get rid of games, but seem to always be acquiring more.

My game room is about 13x13 give or take. It has cupboards along two of the walls and those nifty shallow shelves from ikea. I can't go bigger than a 6' x 4' table. I used to have 8x4 before I did the basement reno. I wish I had more space but apparently my oldest needs a room to sleep in. I tell ya... needy... anyways, it depends on if you are doing hobby work and want a workstation and if what kind of storage you want.

you say "building a house". i helped a buddy build a house (just me and him). you might like these suggestions.

1. go with oversize doors to all the rooms and make sure all angles are spacious. take an empty fridge box and lay it on its side. now imagine carrying it into any spot in the house without banging the walls or doors. that goes for stairs also. you get the idea.

2. when it comes to the hvac system or hot water heater, think of number 1. if repairs are needed you really don't want it tucked into a tight corner or such.

3. the size of table in the game room you said is 4' x 8'. figure adding 3' at least all around. think along the lines of big guys sitting around table and someone has to take a leak. can they squeeze by? this don't even consider the shelves someone already mentioned.

4. i would go with at least one 4 plug-in electric outlets per wall.

5. how much space does a garbage can mini fridge take? if you do a sink, plenty of counter space is a must.

just some thoughts. :)

I recently built a new office and there is a "game room" area of that office, at about 14' long and 11' wide. That's a temporary game table (6' x 2.5'), but I sized it to fit a table that is about 7.5' long and about 4' wide.

I have seen bedrooms that big before, but there is no guarantee they'll be that size. I have seen bedrooms as small as 10x10 but more typically a bit bigger than that. The big thing for me is one big wall without windows for the game shelves.

my father was in the navy, so we had to move into a "new" house every 1-4 years. :S
