TOPIC: Puzzle's from past games

Puzzle's from past games 7 months 3 days ago #1

Loved all the challenging puzzles from past True Dungeons, and i'd love to incorporate some into my current home campaign. Is there a list of these somewhere? anyone remember their favorites?

True Dungeon used to publish adventure modules for the adventures, although I think that stopped in 2020 or so.

Those have the puzzles and solutions in them (and the combat stats).

My favorite all time puzzle was one with goblets / chalices and metal rings, and it turned out the chalices were bells and by striking them with rings you got different tones.

I also really liked the item matching puzzle from one of the Rothfus dungeons.

There were ~10 pedestals and 10 items to place, and scattered around the room were pages of a notebook with highlighted sections, which would describe the characteristics of the items to go on the pedastal.

I don't remember all of them, but some were:

There were bags of otherwise identical pellets, one had a smell, one was magnetic, and one was neither.

There was a meteorite or loadstone, which you could reason was magnetic, as so with those items you could figure out by process of elimination what each bag contained.

There were some nearly identical potion bottles, but one was kept chilled so was cool to the touch.

There were two nearly identical balls, but one didn't bounce as much as the other one.

Etc.

I don't remember the specific details of this one, but there was a puzzle one year that had a message spelled out with letters in a spiderweb suspended above the players. There were some letters that read "correctly" whether you looked up at the web or at the shadows on the ground, and there were conflicting messages based on which one you were looking at. I think you had to use the correct message to determine a safe path to traverse the room.

A similar puzzle from a more recent dungeon (VTD something, don't remember exactly) had letters arranged on the floor. Players had to walk across them in a specific order to disarm a magical lock to proceed to the next room, and there were multiple orientations of letters that spelled different words that appeared to be possible solutions.

One of my favorites from back when I started was a room with giant bioluminescent mushrooms that talked to the players. It was unfortunately really hard to hear due to tech issues, but each mushroom had a little speaker embedded in it that played a message and the players had to solve a logic puzzle spelled out by the messages from each mushroom. Very immersive design in that room - it was one of the things that really got me hooked on TD.

Some years TD released riddle reveal videos after gencon before they expanded to more cons and had the potential for the puzzles to show up elsewhere.

Search youtube for "true dungeon reveal" and you might find some inspiration for your game. 2010 and 2016 appeared to be there at least.

Trent has several printed modules for sale in his store. You might be able to acquire others as well.
