TOPIC: Robert Jordan Dies

Re: Robert Jordan Dies 16 years 8 months ago #13

Your books so far have been fine.
You plan also sounds like a sound one.

I do not really mind cliffhangers, but the authors that have each book in a long series end that way, I think set themselves up on rocky ground.

For instance, I really have liked David Gerrold’s Chitorr series. He was in a different place in his personal life when he was writing them, however (at least that is my interpretation). He left his last book at a cliffhanger, and has failed to find the motivation to finish the next, that was many years ago, early 2000 or before. He has produced many other works, just not the next book in the series. Had he tied up the earlier books, I would feel much better about the entire series, even if ten years later he came out with another one.

Just my opinion though as an avid reader.
Martin is a little too rabid for my tastes. I've had book 3 ever since it came out but I just can't bring myself to read it because I'd have to reread books 1 and 2 too. I get it, I get it, the world is supposed to be super-realistic so that anyone, even main characters, can die. I think he takes it a wee bit too far though. It's a pain in the ass to spend hundreds of pages reading about some complex plot that's growing and growing and growing and of a sudden gets gatted in the space of 5 pages.

I think I like books in which, after I have read them, I have learned something new. They have made me think about a subject in a different way and appreciate a different point of view. Maybe I don't agree with it but maybe I know understand it.
There are some books that I wish I could get my life back that was spent reading them. I tried reading some of the Magic: The Gathering books. Two of them were just terrible. A series of events with no reason for them is what it felt.
I like Terry Prachett books because they often have a point to them (as well as being quite funny).
I am indifferent when it comes to books that use the same characters over and over. Sometimes its nice to read about a favorite character again (kind of like checking in on an old friend). Other times I feel like a character is being over used and has nothing more to offer.

Kind of like getting a history of the US from a story about a modern day Californian in one book, a 17th century New Englander, an 1867 Southerner, and a 1500 native American--maybe following an artifact made by the Indian and given to a French or Spanish explorer.

Sounds good to me. It is also nice when you get a chance to read about the same event from two different view points.
David (S.)

I'm a huge fan of the Chtorr series, and have read all of them more than once. I've been to his website, and I believe that he's done the vast majority of the writing on the next book, and I think has all the rest plotted out. However, it has been so long since one has come out that I'm personally not sure if he'll ever come out with the next book. I know he's said that this series is be far the most difficult set of books he's ever written.

Other favorite series (and I'm sure I'm leaving some off) are Zelazney's Amber series, the World of Tiers series, Death World series, the Belgariad, Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever, Dune (through Dune Messiah - I'm just trying the rest again), Asimov's Foundation series, and of course the Lord of the Rings. I read the first book of the Wheel of Time but wasn't interested enough to continue, although I am very sorry to hear of the death of the author.

I had such trouble getting started in the Wheel of time series.

I bought the first volume in paperback, read about 80 pages, thought that it was a bad Tolkien rip off and threw it away. Three years later after talking to friends who loved the story, I tried again. I got 150 pages into it. And again gave up. But this time I didn't throw it out. About a year after that I descided to just finish the first book to shut up the friends talking about it. And of course I got hooked ran out and bought the next six volumes in hardcover.

The Amber series of books rock! Guy Gavriel Kay's Finovar Tapesty books are pretty awesome as well.

Kim

Holy crap! I can't belive he is dead!?!?!?!? As you can tell from my Forum name im a big fan. This is going to be rough, I knew he should have ended the series earlier. :icon_pale:

The Amber trilogy (prequels) that came out after Zelazney died was surprisingly good, I recommend them. Hopefully there will be more. Elizabeth Wiley's books are very much in the "Amber" flavor as well.

Checking on the Jordan related websites, he had been generating notes and tons of material about the final book so that it will be possible for someone to complete the series. I have no idea who will be the writer. Man there are a TON of loose ends that need to be wrapped up.

Maybe it is good that the final book will be written by someone else. I wish that would have happened with Harry Potter!

Is there any official word the series is being continued? Only definitive thing I've ever seen from RJ is ages back he said he didn't finish due to death he was having all of his crap burned.
