TOPIC: Strider gallops over the Rainbow Bridge

Strider gallops over the Rainbow Bridge 15 years 5 months ago #1

Hi everyone,

Some of you may remember me posting about my horse Strider having colic surgery in December 2007. Well, he colicked again Wednesday morning, and this morning I had to make the difficult decision to have him put down. I took him to the local vet hospital first, and then when he was a little more stable took him to the veterinary college at Texas A&M to see if there was any way to pull him thru medically without having to resort to surgery. Unfortunately, it came down to a choice between another surgery (with all the usual risks of surgery and recovery, and without any guarantee of him not having the same problem again), or to let him go.

They will be doing an autopsy, which will help the students learn about what happened, as well as hopefully give me some peace that I made the right decision.

For those of you who don't already know, I owned Strider's mom, which means I've had him "since conception". He's been like a child to me, and losing him, especially at such a young age, is very hard. He would have been 7 this July. At least he's no longer in pain, and never will be again.

Goodbye Strider. I'll always love you........
Yes, pretty horse. We keep goats and sheep and it's even disturbing to lose one of them. it must be worse with a horse.
Sorry to hear about the loss... my sister raises horses and did throughout our childhood. I know how close you can get and how much it hurts when you've lost one. Take care.
Legally... its questionable. Morally... its disgusting. Personally... I *like* it.

Heidi,

I'm so sorry about Strider. I can still remember the times you talked about him and even showed me pictures when we first met. What a loss. Here's hoping the the students will find what happened and the information will help another horse along the way. I know he is in horse heaven.

Heidi, I am so sorry to hear about Strider. It sounds like you made the right choice but that doesn't make it hurt any less. I'm sorry. :(
