Wake up - It's my way of saying thanks for putting up with all my e-mails...

In case anyone is curious I have given up a few hobbies - like CCGs and others so now I am a TD junkie.

Like I told my party when we finished SOCAL - "that was the coolest thing I have ever done." I mean that - not comparing it to the birth of my kids or anything - but as far as game/adventure type things - paintball pales in comparison in my opinion.

So...with those specials gone bards can't get better gear... weren't we worried that bards were too underpowered and that no one would want to play them?

Wow- I took a break from reading this thread for a week and it exploded. Jeff and I still need to iron out details but the only TD-NPC to character trading I see happening is Blacksmith and Apothocary. The exact particulars of what they will carry is still to be determined and of course stock will change over the con. As for the running commodities board, someone write the program, offer to run it and donate the equiptment and I'll find you the space. I love the idea but my hands are full.

Technology may not be the answer for the commodity board (CB)...I saw what Jeff wrote about a computer screen beamed to the wall - but I think that takes away a little TD flavor...what about a primitive chalk board - or better yet a wall that things are just stuck to?

For example - if a longsword is commonly being traded for 5gp - then on the wall is a mock longsword - or even easier - the words longsword. Next to it is stuck a gold circle with a 5 on it. Markers could be created in 1/2, 1, 3, 5, 10, 15gp etc. denominations and trades could be tracked on a voluntary trade voucher slip that people could hand over to the CB runner - or just leave in a box on the table.

If this idea catches on - I can continue to help with the ideas and mechanics but my project time is going to be limited for a month or so while I wrap up other things. (then tokens arrive and I go into TOKEN FONDLING FRENZY)

Let's chat it up and problem solve a great solution for Jenn and hand her as close to a finished product as possible - that is unless we players decide we don't need this feature afterall.

Thanks

Being completely honest, this commodity board idea will really only be used by hardcore TDers. I'm not saying it is a bad idea but there aren't enough tokens and people trading (yet) to implement such a large idea. An estimated price sheet is far more practical for the masses.

Not to mention, you need someone to run the thing. :P

I like the ideas regarding the chalkboard of prices above, but any solution like a formal commodities board is going to be somewhat complicated and a bit staff intensive. Given that token trading isn't really a core service of the True Dungeon staff, I don't think any staff should be allocated. I'd rather see the Blacksmith and Apocathary list the prices they'll buy and sell stuff at if they have it in stock. No haggling. The prices can be written on a chalkboard so they can be adjusted by the True Dungeon staff during the con if needed. The nice thing about saying no haggling in the NPC stores is that it speeds up the service for everyone. Taking a few minutes to haggle in the blacksmith shop while 10 other people are waiting in line is just going to be a drag for those in line.

The secondary market (treasure token traders) can base their prices on the blacksmith & apocathary prices. A trader may charge just a bit more than the blacksmith for a longsword, for instance, but at least he has one in stock. The blacksmith may not have one in stock.

As a side note, the blacksmith's shop is going to be quite busy, since everyone who's playing gets a weapon and an armor token pull. All the wizards, bards, and rogues are going to flock to the blacksmiths shop to sell their heavy armor and get either money or the appropriate-sized armor.

bgardner,

A chalkboard, I like it! It speeds up transactions which is exactly what the blacksmith and Apocathary need given (as you mentioned) the flood of people looking to exchange. Chalkboard is also more in the D&D style than the projector.

As far as staff intensive - the board would not have to be updated more than once a day. I suggest it be updated twice a day - say around noon and the end of the day so that the prices are kept close to current.

If a voluntary "trade slip" idea is used - no-one need staff the board during operational hours...the slips could be tallied on a lunch break or at closing.

Jenn, I could do this tracking and updates for you along with what other Tavern responsibilites you may assign me, if you decide a CB is worth it.

I'll see to it that a chalkboard is set up in the trading area of the town square. Gary and/or others will take care of it. This is going to be a player run thing rather than a TD run thing. TD is trying to let the 'economy' stay as player driven as possible.
