I have been buying "a lot " since 2007. Only the last 2 years have I got a GT. it is not always a certainty

yeah, but I've never gotten one and I'm probably the last of the oldschool semi-big buyers who has never picked one up. I'm certainly bucking the odds.

Near the front, on the left. I think...second row? There were several DDA member to my right, the person whom I do not know a name for (yet) on my left, and Raven on their left. Can't remember what the case looked like, but remember thinking it was a neat idea. :-)

Heya Persolo! Kim (Kithren) was sitting to my right, at the riddle reveal. And she does indeed have a nice case for her tokens ; )

Sweet! I'm starting to put faces to names...soon I'll be dangerous. ;-) Still remember the conversation at Rock Bottom. "Who was that sitting at the end of our row?" *others* "THAT was raven *chuckles*" Me: *FACEPALM*

there are no certainties. however, as you have figured out, the more you buy, the greater your chances.

now i will not tell you numbers, i can give you a ballpark idea...i've spent more on tokens than my house, truck, jeep, cobra (built for racing) combined. and also girlfriend. :P i trade a lot and in turn try to help out folks that miss combo/trade-in times.

IT IS ALL ABOUT THE EVENT AND HAVING FUN. when it isn't fun anymore, i'll find something else.

I won't do what Lazlo did..however, I will say..if it ever becomes not fun, try to find a Newbie *does a quick look over at the 43 next to his post count*, and be as charitable as you wish? Particularly with the two most COVETED tokens out there? ;-)

I should do a "How to define you are a newbie", and include "If you think you can trade a Boots of Might for an AoW, or a HoP, you MIGHT be a Noob". Then again, tokens, even high priced ones like those, are relative in value to the people playing. So, one never knows.

I hope you find enjoyment in the game for many more years. I've been doing it since..2008? think that's the first year Kurtreznor got me involved...and have been enjoying it since. My greatest complaint is that Gencon always fell the week before student loans would kick in...and now that I'm a graduate, I have no loans (or a job, YET), but I still make enough to at least run through the game a time or two. Eventually...I'll be a tokenholic..am already being told that the tell-tale signs are there. :-) Til then, I have wonderful people, like Kurtreznor and Druegar, to help me limp my way through a nightmare run.

you mentioned the 2 most "COVETED" tokens. i am curious as to which 2 you are referring? i place an equal and high value on a few tokens, but more because of their providence/history.

1. ring of three wishes - aquired from a friend after many years of being teased by it.
2. 50' rope - autographed by Lee Vaughn (more to the story).
3. cloak of displacement - my first purp; finangled out of dungeon in '05.
4. ring of the bad ass - a gift from Tom Gowen after a particularly cruel joke, but hilarious all the same.
5. a "green" purple weapon used by a certain barbarian on the SoCal red cross charity run.
6. a certain token that hasn't been made yet. oh, the quests that we task ourselves to.

so as you can see, value is relative to perspective.

The two I see as being most coveted, in terms of "How the ##$# do I acquire, the prices on E-bay are horrifying" at the AoW, and HoP. However...I'm curious on the story on your number 2, and can definitely see each as being very novel and neat. My first Purp was in two packs I could afford a year ago..in addition to the two I got at the con. Platemail of Attack. That was awesome as my first Purp. Then traded it for the Ring of Riches this year (which was awesome on a run we tanked). Then, pulled Boots of Might from the treasure box..so, that was my first drawn Purp. Relative values are cool.

I'm sensing mythic stories behind several of yours...hope to get to hear those sometime. The stories surrounding TD can be as much fun, if not moreso, as the event itself.

I have been stealing your Odds, Henwy.

I, too, am an oldschool semi-big buyer (like DrUnknown, I enjoy making a sizable donation to TD every year, and am thrilled to receive tokens in return!) and I have, so far, received THREE Golden Tickets. Obviously Fate likes me better than she likes you ;P

(See how I said that, in print? Now Fate can backhand me by never giving me a Golden Ticket again, and start giving you your rightful share, Henwy.)

@persolo - Maybe I don't understand, but if you were a student, you should have been able to get your loans deferred during the summer between semesters. I would sometimes have to do some leg work to prove that I was enrolled in the fall, but unless I had just finished a degree, or hadn't gotten my class schedule nailed down yet, I never had to pay during the summer. But then again, maybe I'm not understanding 'just when student loans start to hit'.

I'm a bit of a 'professional' student, so I'm a bit of an expert on student loans. (As an aside... do not take private student loans unless you have NO and I mean NO other choice. They can basically write whatever rules they want, and bend you over and give you a good buggering while these loans remain protected from bankruptcy. For example, I'm forced to make payments on my private loans while I'm still in school because the terms of my private loans put very restrictive amounts of in school deferments I could get.)

Anyways.....

Hello, I'm Thes... and I too am a token-holic.

Whew... that was the 1st step.... now 11 more to ignore. :P

I would love to order the choose your own purple mass loads of tokens that go on sale here, but I know as a student I am far to po' for that.

I dream about the time (maybe 10 years in the future  ) when I'm actually making some real money and I can do crazy things like that... until then I have to keep hoping I pull a UR from a treasure pull.

Oh, and don't cry for me Argentina... My future is bright enough that shades are required... it's just that right now, that future is a bit far away. AND I WANT THOSE UR'S RIGHT NOW! :silly:
