TOPIC: Treasure Enhancer Value vs Cost

Treasure Enhancer Value vs Cost 2 years 5 months ago #1

I'm new to true dungeon so its quite possible that I'm missing something, but I don't understand treasure enhancers. Almost high-level builds it seems to be a given that Charm of Avarice and the 3 treasure enhancing ion stones should be included.

1 The general agreement seems to be that a treasure pull is worth about $3.

2. A charm of Avarice (+13 tokens at most) currently sells for about $1850 based on a recent auction. The ion stone nuggets (+2 tokens) sell for between $175 (gold and silver) to $100 (platinum). Buying a full set will cost around $2300 to get 19 extra tressure pulls/run. (If these can be bought for less, please message me with more information.)

If the above numbers are correct it takes around 40 runs to "earn" the value of a tressure enhancing package. Even taking the best value token (the platinum nugget) it takes around 16 runs to break even. How many runs are people doing in a year? If you only go to gen con and you do the three different dungens once each it would take 13 years for the tokens to "pay off". If we value tresure tokens at $4 instead it still takes 30 runs.

In addition, skipping the treasure enhancers is like having a free slot enhancer that lets you run an extra charm and 3 extra ion stones. I've come up with the following reasons why they might be so popular.

1. You run the same dungeon over and over again. If you're doing 10+ runs a year the pay off is much faster.

2. You just love pulling treasure regardless of the value.

3. You assume that the enhancers will maintain or grow in value over the years. If you ever quit you can get your intital investment back, plus all the extra tresure you pulled over the years.

Please help me understand. I'd be willing to shell out the money to buy the tokens but it seems I would be much better off spending the $2000+ on a stack of purples or maybe a class legendary and 10 purples to go with it.

The cost of the CoA raised about $500 with the addition of VTD and more runs being done.

The expected value of a treasure pull is approximately $3 but that can be heavily skewed by things like pulling a $75 UR token, a $300 relic, a $1000 legendary as well as things like the tinker toys this year worth $20-25 each and seeming to average approximately 3 per 50 treasure

Treasure Enhancers have NEVER lost value since the game began and are generally considered the only tokens in game that are immune to devaluation risk.

with VTD monthly and 1x in person event, if you run each dungeon one time you're running approximately 8 dungeons per year. If you run more than once that quickly hits your "pay off" mark.

And again I've never seen a treasure enhancing token lose value.

Your analysis is correct. Some of us play a LOT

There is Virtual True Dungeon now too, so it's not just conventions. Click "Upcoming Events" at the top to see everything. Even pre-covid you could attend 3-4 cons in a year and do 20 runs easily. So it quickly becomes "worth it" if you play that much.
Classes Played: Barbarian (65 times), Monk (56), Ranger (33), Rogue (25), Cleric (21), Fighter (13), Druid (12), Paladin (11), Dwarf Fighter (10), Bard (7), Elf Wizard (2), Wizard (2)

There is also the fact not everyone paid the current ‘retail’ price for TE’s. The Silver Nugget was between 80 and 120 when it was in print, same with Gold. The CoA is more difficult to figure initial cost because there are multiple ways to make anywhere from 3 UR’sto 7. Thoses UR’s are pricey now but we’re originally.

You can get an idea of the kinds of treasure, and the % of drops, from this:

This is a decent sized sampling that may help you decide whether or not you want to drop the $$ on TEs.

I run in a group that has full treasure enhancers and will be completing my own CoA at Skull Con, with that said I am not sure the value is there. The items you draw using the treasure enhancers are not going to get you to an epic build faster than if you just bought better gear. In fact as you pointed out it will be slower because you have less slots to work with.

So then why do I use them and why am I transmuting a CoA? Because drawing treasure is fun. I particularly enjoy the periodic collection puzzles (Orion’s Belt, Totem of Heroism). Also who knows maybe you will draw a random Legendary… there are always a few each convention. :)

you could do what i am doing... 20+ runs at GC and a bunch of virtual runs. i would think i have paid off my TE tokens by now... maybe?

If you are playing 1-2 times per year at Gencon or another convention, TEs are absolutely not worth it. Please remember that according to Jeff 90% of players play with their starting pack tokens.

However if you're like a lot of us degenerates on here, and sometimes play 10 plus times at a single convention or a VTD weekend, the TEs "pay" for themselves rather quickly, and your ROI is much greater.

While all the replies are true, my feeling is this...if you're worried about ROI, then it's probably not for you. I'm in the camp that getting lots of treasure is fun. Sometimes I'll pull something really good, and sometimes not so much. Do you play the lottery?

Based on how many runs I do, I could say that it's paid for itself, but then I've also paid for a lot of runs. I think if I did all the math, I'd just start to get really scared. So again, my advice is do what you think is fun.

I will disagree. ROI is part of it but remember I is not going to be much more than break even.

For me, I track every dime I spend on this game against every token I have. Am I break even? Yes if I am patient and sell. If I firesale, nope but remember with treasure enhancers, I build most of everything else while having fun too. You can play a game on your phone buying pixels. Something like empires and puzzles and enjoy the occasional gatcha win. Again to win a pixel tho, you can say goodbye to any value. With a game like TD, you buy the TEs, earn the extra draws…and eventually you could resell your TEs at about what you paid…in the end same price for dungeon and get tons of free Treasure. It’s a game of how you look at it

I invest in stocks and crypto too. But make no mistake, true dungeon tokens IS a small line item on my diversification portfolio (under collections and art)…we all collect strange things. I just collect tokens

I seem to view TEs entirely differently.

You don't need any tokens to play. Better builds might be more fun, they might not, but other than more completion tokens and more XP, better builds don't have material rewards (ignoring like Libram of Looting for those precous rares).

More treasure reduces the cost of playing in some theoretical sense (theoretical since you only mitigate cost by actually selling tokens you get from treasure or that treasure allows you to transmute or by causing you to not buy tokens you would have bought if you didn't get them in treasure). This is vastly more important to me because I no longer do 1-2 runs a year - I have particularly enjoyed doing more runs with VTD, which is convenient in a way PTD isn't, and the cost for more than like one run wouldn't be justified if I didn't have some perception that I was paying less than $68 a ticket, even though I hardly convert treasure into $$ in any effective way in practice, so it pretty much is $68 a ticket.

Point being that I view it less as "if you run 1-2 times a year, not worth it" as "I don't have ticket cost reducers, so I should only play 1-2 times a year". In other words, if I sold off TEs, I'd play less.

But, whatever, people have different interests. Maybe it's vastly more important to someone to play Epic and be successful than to get as much treasure as possible. After all, True Grind has no extra treasure draws, and some people would do more of that if they could.
