They are definately cooler with the metal insert in small quantities...but in large scale numbers they are HEAVY.

I think for the catch'em effect - TD is better off with the metal inside as they look and feel more substantial. (And at $1 each - well heavier feeling is perceived as a good thing.) Likewise, if the majority of folks get 1-10 bags a year...well they most likely are happy and could care less about the weight.

Side note - TSA - I passed my tokens for INDY 2008 in page sheets and in a special case (might have been 350 or so . When they went through the x-ray - the lady took a double take and then noticed I was looking at her - so she had the question face on and I said - poker chips...she nodded and passed it right through. We talked briefly as I was putting on my shoes...and I asked if she had seen them before - and she said yes, quite often in fact. (Thought this was strange as tokens were in pages - not in rows...but such is life.)

I had mine in a carry-on bag, too, on the way to Gen Con. Inside, the tokens were in Ziploc bags, so when the TSA lady asked what they were, I said, "Tokens for a role-playing game." She was able to see them easily in the bags, and there wasn't any problem with them.

We flap our arms really hard, but weighted down with tokens, our efforts are pointless.

Last year my wife interviewed for a job in northeastern Indiana. My first comment when she told me about the interview was how it would put me really close to Gen Con!

okay - so, continuing the "off subject" topic of token weight, I wonder if Jeff has given thought to reducing the weight. Would it be possible to cut the weight in half? That would help those with hoards of tokens and still provide some heft to the tokens.

JKW

That might be nice, though I can't see it as a serious option. TD probably gets a pretty big discount buying in bulk. Splitting into two different weights would likely weaken that and cause added problems of having to keep enough of both types in stock. Still, if it's workable, I'm all for it. Hell, I'd love a trade-in program since the weight is too much as it is.

I don't have a postal scale... but I'd guess the weight on the chippies to be roughly 13 Grams / token it's the heavy end of Poker chips.

The weight could be reduced ( 11g, and 8g are common weights) but... would that create a ( old chippe / new chippe) sliding Debate?

Personally the Current weight is about perfect... I think. But admitedly... I don't carry Huge cases of them to/from gencon, nor to/from TR.... and I can drive to both as it stands.

I like some of the Ideas that are coming out for Trade tokens ( both the GP reserve, and stuff like dwarven steel) I hope that Jeff comes out with a broader Range of these, so that the Higher end Token Buyers can still but in volumes, and then transfer those to a somewhat more portable format.

Personally... I'd like to see the old tokens, and whatnot show back up in some non-useable format.... such as a chest of chippies ( or woodies), with a plexiglass cover.. something that we could use the "used" tokens for without screwing the rarity up.

Jeff has introduced encumbrance into TD. Nice! :)

This talk about token weight reminds me so much of D&D characters that are trying to carry too much. "Whadya mean I can only move at half speed? I need to carry around that extra plate mail - you never know when it will come in handy."

Heh.

encumbrance? did I miss something? or do we need to flap even harder?
