Because I live in California, if I sell to customers in California I would be obliged to collect sales tax and file additional tax forms with CA. This is a particular nightmare because in CA the sales tax computation can depend on the tax rates of both the seller and buyer's locations, and state, county, and even city taxes.

This is avoided by the simple expedient of not selling to folks in California.
