TOPIC: Please help me upgrade my Barbarian

Here's the final build, I hope. We'll see how it does at Gen Con. I'll probably try to talk my group into going for nightmare difficulty.

I noticed in a very early post, you stated your group usually does Normal mode. Your build can survive Nightmare, but it isn't powerful enough to carry the team by itself. Unless the rest of your group is also improving their builds, I would suggest Hardcore.

Thanks to everyone who helped with my build. Now I have two more questions.

1. Can I have a Mighty Sling and Ravager Large Shield in ranged and offhand slots? tdcharactercreator.com lets me select it, but Character Generator on my phone doesn't.
2. If I was going to save up for a decent UR token to upgrade my current build, what should I upgrade first? What UR tokens would benefit me but are not super expensive.

Probably just a bug in the program. Just post on the thread for the app so it can be fixed on the next update. But yes it works according to the tokens

In the phone app the Ravager large shield is not listed correctly. I’ll post in the App thread

I think you're at the point where adding UR tokens, especially inexpensive ones, will yield incremental improvements rather than major upgrades. There are some thoughts:

- The Lucky set is relatively inexpensive at the moment, especially the charm/kilt. Lucky Light Mail + Lucky charm will get you the set bonus (+5 HP), +3 to all saves, +2 AC, at the cost of the -2 Reflex on Darkling void (for a net of +1 Reflex)
- The UR stat-boosting neck items may be an option. Stu-pendous Pendant will net you +1 hit/damage with melee, +1 hit ranged, +1 reflex, +1 AC. Medallion of Valhalla will give the same melee benefits, plus some HP and fort saves.

Ultimately, you may be best off targeting some relics though
- The Barbarian class neck Medallion of Furious Attack will get you +6 damage, an additional use of rage, and the Fury ability to 1/game just say that you're critting. It's gone for ~$200 the past few eBay auctions.
- Ring of Heroism to get to Level 5. This increases strength, give an extra +2 damage from Rage, and gives you DR 1 from all sources (except push and eldritch). They run around $175-$200
- Bead of the Lucky Traveler is currently best in slot for beads and will get you +2 saves and free movement. They're available right now for $150-ish but have been trending up.

Marc makes some great suggestions. I also agree with his assessment that you have reached the point where you will only get marginal improvements with inexpensive tokens. To really improve, you are now looking at the more expensive stuff. To that end, I will also suggest the Silver Nugget IS. More treasure is always a good thing.

For a single upgrade, I would find a way i get 5th level, as it is the single largest upgrade you have left.

A 5th Barbarian gains the following over a 4th level Barbarian:
+12 HP
+2 STR (+1 hit, +1 damage)
Greater Rage (an additional +2 damage over normal rage, for +6 total)
Damage Reduction (-1 damage from all sources, excluding push damage between rooms)

For a UR level boost, I’d look at cook’s Hat or ring of fateful Heroism. Both of those have down sides though. For some extra cash, the ring of heroism or charm of Heroism are great choices.

The might set can also get you an extra level, crown, boots and belt (the expensive three) are also generally beneficial. The boots came down in price when they saw a rare replacement reprint! The crown is not spectacular, it is a bonus to hit in melee. The belt is just good, not great, but solidly good with the stat and saves bonuses. It means no “lost slot” though also three changed slots, and finding a cheap might set of three specific tokens. Stay away from the orb as you want the two handed weapons.

From your tokens, it’ll be a lower ac for +1 to hit in melee (see below). Nethercraft are the boots replacement so /shrug and set! The belt nets -1 hit/damage in melee, and +1 to hit /damage in range, and +1 to all saves. It also nets your the level stuff (DR? Hp, and the str upper along with the extra rage damage) .

The three were less than a charm of heroism last I checked, I recall the crown was the most expensive part of the three. I use this combo for “party monk” when I’m not trying to make the one monk to rule them all and it works nice, my “party Barb” is rocking a heroism ring as that was what I had first, and she can’t use a crown with the redoubt set. That does point to another concern though, charm /ring might be less obstructive for future growth. Death Knight (mail is a PYP now) and redoubt both have helmet slot items, which make this option potentially less beneficial long term.
