New to TD, looking for a group. 2 years 9 months ago #1

This is the year I have finally decided to do True Dungeon. Unfortunately I have no experience and no friends to do it with. Looking for a group to help me prepare and to adventure with.

Welcome Cody!

Are you doing in-person or virtual?

Edit: For some reason I thought I saw the word GenCon in the post. Updated accordingly. Much of the below is also true for virtual runs, minus the parts about opening packs of tokens during the run.

Welcome! Before I joined the forums, I spent several years playing TD without a fixed group, so it's absolutely possible to just turn up by yourself on the day and enter the run you previously purchased a ticket for. Runs like that are often referred to as pick-up groups (PUGs) here on the forum.

As a few general tips for your first in-person game,

You won't need to prepare beforehand (unless you want to), each run starts with 15 minutes in a waiting room where you will open your pack of tokens (you get one just for entering), choose your character class and assign your tokens to your character on the playmat provided. Your coach will answer any questions you have about what class to play as and what abilities your tokens might have, and will record things like your character stats so you don't need to.

Before the run, your group will be provided with a choice of which difficulty they would like to play. Normal is suitable while you don't own many tokens, while Hardcore is perhaps something to consider for the future if you pick up a lot of tokens specifically suited to your character, mainly Rares and higher. Higher difficulties include Nightmare and Epic, and are only suitable for experienced players with large collections of high rarity tokens.

After that, you will be taken to a coaching room where you can practice the abilities which are specific to your character class, to give you a good feel for them before the run. Your coach will be able to answer any questions about the game in this room too.

A run is seven rooms long. Rooms are either combat-based or puzzle-based, I'll not go into details though to avoid spoiling any surprises for your first run.

Lastly, when you open your packs of tokens, pay special attention to the color of the name on each token. That's how you determine the rarity - black for common, green for uncommon, red for rare and purple for ultra-rare. You will also get some further tokens including a participation token and a few random treasure tokens after you make it to the end of the run (even if your character doesn't survive).

Unfortunately I'm not in a position to form a group for in-person games since my availability for runs isn't clear yet, but there will be plenty of people signing up for runs so hopefully you'll not have too much trouble finding a group :)
I play Rogue. Occasionally I even play Rogue well.

Make sure to check the thread over here, a community member is donating free starter kits to newer players. There's also virtual True Dungeon going on monthly now, it allows you to play over Zoom from home. It's been going on for about a year and a half now and works pretty great.

Debatable...lol

I honestly wouldn't recommend VTD to someone that has never played TD before, but wants to play TD. VTD is a poor substitute for the real thing. Granted it is better than nothing for those of us addicted to TD and want to play as much as possible, but much of the appeal of TD is lost in VTD, imo. The sets and sights in TD are what kept me back to TD. Jeff and Co put on a great show. VTD is entertaining but doesn't have that wow factor that happens when you walk into a exhibit hall and are transported into another realm. I am very much aware that I am sitting at my computer clicking a button when playing VTD. And though the sets and monsters might be impressive in VTD (except the CGI stuff because that definitely is not impressive), I think it loses that over zoom.

Don't get me wrong there are new people that try VTD and are wowed by it. There are likely folks that play VTD that will never get the chance to experience TD at convention. However if you have a chance to experience it live, I would not recommend getting the watered down version first, wait till you see the real thing and then get addicted like the rest of us. But that is just my two cents.

I think watching the how to play VTD might give one a sense of whether they'd like it or not.

Just to prove the point that there’s always an opposing opinion, I found that VTD was a great way to get comfortable with True Dungeon before trying it in person. I found the idea of showing up and playing this game with at least half a group of strangers very daunting and honestly may not have tried it if I hadn’t had a chance to build my confidence with VTD first. Knowing the rules, understanding how the tokens work, getting used to the general flow of the game, all of those things are fully possible in VTD. And then I could just be really excited about finally playing in person rather than half terrified. :)

Greeting Cody! I like how you are succinct in your post. There are many levels of TD and I remember my 1st 2 times attempting to play. Great folks here. I wish I had found the forums before playing!
