I love the thought of a "defender for skirmisher" set, but it'd be nice to keep the identify of the Defender set separate and give some other three-piece bonus. Couple ideas I suggested last year:
- Cannot be surprised
- Immune to fear
- "Quick strike" ability

So basically give something that makes fighter appealing to everyone, but with less AC?


I’m not sure what you mean. All those classes have access to 5 AC torso slot items and 3 AC shields.

A rare-powered version of one of the Stu-Pendous Pendant, Medallion of Valhalla, or Medallion of the Sweetwoods.

E.g. on of:

+3 to CON, +2 to DEX
+2 to STR, +3 to CON

Let’s not.

Part of the identity of Fighter (or so I’ve been told) is great gear. This only works if Fighter actually has better gear though. Defender set is shared among fighters, Paladin and Cleric, certainly classes that could use an edge somewhere. The gear edge at rare keeps dropping off with lower AC alternatives. Powered plate mail was down geared to drop the AC and leave the best part in place with the ravager armor. Nether stout armor was down geared to stout mail. Bliss bull armor was down geared to nether brute armor. The Defender set is one of the last areas that the Fighter and other heavy armor classes get something special beyond just extra AC.

The widely available+5 armor is reinforced leather, which has no other benefit. Let’s not make a superior version that creates a set that gives free action. Let Ranger, rogue, Druid, etc equip boots of the marauder for free action.

Also note, there is a long chain of this same thing occurring at UR too

I think you should be advocating for fighters to have better armor, than that Bards and whoever shouldn't have access access a rare that is better than +5 AC in the torso slot when:

* Strictly better than a flat +5 AC torso rare armor like Chainmail of the Vale has been available since 2013 and is currently available on the secondary market for under $5
* Various other armors available to these classes at Rare are arguably quite a bit better than a flat +5 AC

+4 to AC and +2 to reflex saves
+4 to AC and -5 from Cold
+4 to AC and +2 to fort saves
+4 to AC and +1 melee damage
+4 to AC and +1 to hit with missile attacks
+4 to AC and -5 from Darkrift

I agree that trying to limit defensive armor, particularly for Clerics and Paladins at rare level would be a mistake. I also agree that fighters could use something special.

Maybe:
Armor of Steel Mastery: AC 8 +2 to hit fighters only

Maybe the GP token slots could be used for single class items that otherwise would be tough to take a slot in the print run for, e.g.

400 GP +1 Praetorian’s Halberd - Two handed - Fighters
-3 from retaliation damage
Damage Wheel 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11

600 GP +2 Dread Flail - one handed
Fighters
Damage Wheel: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10

The main drawback I see here is confusion if this can be transmuted for Aragonite, but since we have the transmute categories printed on the token now that seems like less of a problem than it once would have been.
